Artist Feature: Choze

We’ve been playing out Badders by Choze recently on Phoenix FM, and we caught up with the artist to find out a little bit more about his life and music.

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is CHOZE and I’m an alternative/Grime artist that has been on the scene for more than a decade. I’m an artist that has performed with rocks bands to orchestras and released music that critics say “a breath of fresh air”. I’ve released a few singles in the past that received full support from National and regional stations. I have an album called DIY which features legends Barrington levy and the late Skibadee. I’m from south west London and I’ve been an ambassador campaigning against gun and knife crime also. My story has been recognised by many big new outlets such as Huffington Post and Metro newspaper. I continue to make art to inspire the new generation of today.

When did you first start to develop a passion for music?

When I first witnessed Oxide and Neutrino’s “Bound For The Reload” and the Prodigy’s “No Good For Me” video. That was the moment that I wanted to become an artist. The sound and visuals were so fresh and innovative. I wanted to be an artist that created his own style that would separate me from the rest.

Which artists did you listen to while growing up?

The Prodigy, So Solid Crew, Dizzee Rascal, Massive Attack, Wiley, Skibadee, Soul II Soul. To be honest there’s a never-ending list that I will disclose at a later time lol. Mostly artist in the 80’s and 90’s that had a massive impact on the scene, influenced me.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?

I would honestly say that I’m an alternative/grime artist. My sound represents different elements of UK genres but Grime is my love. I grew up being on pirate radio as an MC since a teenager and it’s been embedded in me. It’s in my performance and music but I try to take it to a next level. Reason why I say it’s alternative also. Visually I want people to see my music as being unorthodox.

What music have you recorded and released to date?

My L.P DIY which has been critically acclaimed worldwide and I continue to keep pushing the project. I believe that if 250,000 people ain’t heard your record, you still have work to do.

Who do you enjoy listening to right now and do they influence your songwriting?

Lil Simz and Chase and Status. These acts are my influence visually and sonically right now. I love everything they do. I try to create my own stamp by studying their art. Truly incredible music acts.

Who would your dream collaboration be with?

Chase and Status. I would love to do a track with them. Their production is out of this world. I truly believe they’re world class musicians. A record with them would be a dream come true. I reckon we would make something special. I have that feeling burning inside.

What are your plans for the future?

Keep promoting the album D.I.Y. I’m looking to release an E.P then another album. That is the goal and hopefully with my team we can achieve this. Stay tuned, trust me!
