The best way to keep your heart healthy is to have a healthy diet. Each year about 4,000 people die from heart disease. There’s a lot of conflicting information about heart health and nutrition.
Current evidence strongly supports eating plenty of fruit and veg, legumes and pulses. Small quantities of lean meat, fish and small amounts of vegetable oils.
Eggs are actually ok but limit their consumption as much as possible as they are high in cholesterol.
Coconut oil or palm oil is very high in calories and as it heats up it changes it’s nutritional properties and could even be a contributory factor to cancer.
Olive oil is better but low amounts as it’s high in calories.
Juicing has been very popular, but the process itself means that the juice is very high in calories. You can eat 5 or 6 apples and be fine, but the juicing process makes it very high in calories for the amount consumed. Eating whole fruits and vegetables is preferred. If you do juice avoid adding sugar.
You can’t go wrong with following the mediterranean diet. Most of the evidence points to that being the healthiest for your heart. Plus all of the usual general health advice which is to exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep and avoid cigarettes and alcohol.
