There has been a lot of talk in the press about obesity and Boris has been encouraging us all to lose weight as obesity is a link to the more severe complications of the disease. But it’s not just Covid that we need to worry about if we are overweight. Men who store excess belly fat around their middles are more likely to suffer from prostate cancer.
A man with a 40 inch waist or above had=s a higher risk of death from prostate cancer than a man whose waist is 35 inches.
Fat stored in the belly is considered the most dangerous type as it coats the internal organs with fat too.
If fat is stored all over the body rather than just the belly, this puts the men in the low risk category.
Visceral fat is the most dangerous type and stimulates the growth of tumour cells. It’s associated with metabolic and hormone dysfunction. Prostate cancer is now more common than breast cancer, but this could be due to the fact that men are checking themselves more now. If it’s caught in the early stages it is curable so the message is, keep checking and if you spot any problems do go to your GP to get checked out properly. Obesity and lack of exercise are linked with not just this, but all forms of cancer.
