The stress and expense of Christmas can hit us hard, that’s without all the excesses of food and drink which all take their toll.
But don’t despair too quickly, you may not have been as bad as you think when it comes to your health. There are hidden health benefits.
Mulled wine is a Christmas favourite, containing citrus fruits and spices. Red wine contains resveratrol which can reduce the risk of heart disease. Citrus fruits contain high levels of vitamin c to support the immune system. Studies have shown that cinnamon contains anti -inflammatories which can also help the immune system. Nutmeg can reduce bloating, gas and diarrhoea. So next time you have a glass of this festive beverage, don’t feel too bad.
That nice feeling you get when you give a gift is good for your soul too. A recent survey has found that giving gifts actually activates the feel good section of your brain, and can extend your lifespan!
This is the same for volunteering too, it has been discovered that people over the age of 50 who regularly do volunteer work have, on average, lower blood pressure than those who don’t.
Putting up the decorations causes a spike in dopamine which makes us feel good. Putting up decorations can also mean that you are opening up communications to your neighbours and joining in with them in the festivities.
In other words Christmas is good for you!!
Wishing you all a very Happy and Healthy 2019
