Way back in the 1970’s there was a very fashionable diet called the wine and egg diet, and that is no joke!! We can hardly imagine such a thing today, but it’s true.
Three hard boiled eggs per day and a bottle of wine doesn’t sound the ideal way to lose weight, but a copy of Vogue in November 1977 was giving that advice. It was first made popular in the 1962 book Sex and the Single Girl. It promised a weight loss of up to 7 pounds in three days and would make you feel sexy and full of joie de vivre!
For breakfast, it’s one hard boiled egg and a glass of white wine. Lunch is two hard boiled eggs and two glasses of wine. For dinner its a steak and the remainder of the bottle of wine, followed by black coffee.
I don’t know how many people actually followed this diet, but it is sadly lacking in nutrition and could lead to severe dehydration, with any weight loss being put straight back on once normal eating is resumed.
That’s aside from the obvious negatives of becoming alcohol dependant if it’s continued for too long.
It’s quite incredible that this was given as sound dietary advice, and illustrates how far we’ve come in understanding our bodies and the effects of different things on our health. Who knows what untold damage was done by this kind of diet. Thank goodness we know better now!
