In my opinion, the Undertaker is the greatest wrestler in WWE history. His size, his skill and technique, his character and yes his loyalty to Vince McMahon have given Mark Calaway (The Undertaker) unprecedented longevity, and rightly so, legend status.
The Undertaker is however very close to permanent retirement after 25 years on our screens, choosing to appear only a handful of times per year. For a long time I believed no one could replace him. Until now. There is one person, and that person is Bray Wyatt
Bray is frustratingly held back in the WWE. He is consistently not given top billing matches and he is consistently losing feuds to minor characters, and if WWE are not careful, they will lose a potential gold mine for them, and legend in the making for us.
Bray is head of the Cultist Wyatt family. A group of towering deep south American behemoths (beards seem to be mandatory for membership), and the concept is a good one, a solid stable for the WWE.
But it is Bray himself of course who is the star. He is incredibly talented. Bray is a very good on mic talker and importantly he is excellent in ring, with a high degree of skill. But it is his character that sets him apart. This idea of a strange back woods cult leader is very attractive, and is a toned down version of the outrageous characters of the 90s. Bray’s character is believable because we fully believe characters like this exist in the lonely parts of America that we don’t want to visit.
Whether it is walking to the ring with the lights out carrying his lantern (a worthy contender to Undertakers own entrance) or his insistence in his family wearing some very creepy masks… Bray is potentially huge.
To this point Bray has been held back. But over the last couple of weeks we have seen him finally getting a push. He is very slowly turning face (a good guy) and the fans love it. When a baddie is cheered more than the current face WWE champion (Roman Reigns), then you know there is a problem.
This is probably the WWE’s last chance to get it right with Bray before they lose him. And to lose a finisher like Sister Abigail or his Regan Exorcist terrifying spider walk, would be an absolute disaster.
Lets hope Bray and his Wyatt family are finally thrust into the limelight, where we will gladly follow.
