Is snoring a problem for you or do you have a partner who snores?

Snoring is a problem for so many people, it is the relaxing of soft tissues in the airways, causing a blockage and subsequent vibration as the air tries to pass through. it could be due to a number of factors, so the first thing to do is to try and find the cause.

One of the most common causes of snoring is weight gain. So if this seems likely, then the first line of attack would be to try and diet, and a bit of exercise too as poor muscle tone can also be a contributory factor.

From middle age onwards the muscle tone in the throat lessens and the throat gradually narrows. Throat exercises can be helpful if you suspect this is the cause.

It could of course be in your genes. Men are more likely to snore than women. You may also be aware of a physical condition that could be affecting the airways, like a cleft palate or enlarged adenoids. Nasal and sinus problems too.

Drinking, smoking and vaping are also possible culprits. Also anti depressants,as they are targeting stress and tension and encouraging all of the muscles to relax. Alcohol related snoring is quite common, so you may notice that you or your partner snore more after an evening tipple.

Sleeping position is one to consider too.If you sleep on your back it’s likely that the muscles will relax back into the throat, so try sleeping on your side and see if it makes a difference.

If you’ve tried all of these possible solutions, then try visiting your doctor for a second opinion. There are many other medical solutions, including operating, so talk to your gp to find out more.
