We’ve been playing out Goals by RL on Phoenix FM over the past couple of weeks – but who is RL? We caught up with him to find out more.

Tell us a little bit about your yourself?

I have always had trouble answering this type of question because I’m still trying to find myself. I grew up with a passion for music. I never really was a popular kid growing up, always bullied since my dad left when I was 7 years old. Music helps me escape from reality. The only time I really get into my thoughts is in the studio. The studio is where I really express who I really am. Whether I’m making sick beats on the drums or expressing my feelings into the mic. Music is therapy to me. Music was always there for me.

I really like playing video games and being around family. I don’t really go out and party. I don’t like being in crowds, I’d rather be in front of them.

When did you first start to develop a passion for music?

I first started developing a passion for music at 4 years old. My dad was a drummer and I grew up around music. Music was and still is a big part of my life.

I started drumming at the age of 4.

I started writing poetry in middle school throughout high-school. Shortly after graduation I was assaulted by a machete and grabbed the blade. I lost the ability to drum for a while. So I started putting my poetry into music.

Which artists did you listen to while growing up?

I grew up listening to a lot of different music genres. Eminem, 2 Pac, Biggie, Blink 182 and Mötley Crüe mostly. And so much more..

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?

Deep, lyrical and inspirational. My music sends out a message, everything I write about is real. If you can relate to my lyrics then you will understand. All my music has different moods. My music is not the type you would hear in clubs. My music does NOT promote violence or drugs.

What music have you recorded and released to date?

-Struggles
-Escape
-Wasted Time
-Life Choices
-R.L Music
-Stay
-Amazing
-Depression
-GOALS

Which artists do you enjoy listening to at the moment – and do they influence your work?

I really enjoy listening to NF, Cryptic Wisdom, Vin Jay, Tech N9ne & Hopsin. They are a very big influence and inspiration for my music!

Who would your dream collaboration be with?

My Dream collaboration would definitely be with NF. I feel like me and him would make a great song together.

What are your plans for the future?

My future plans are to release my first album, set up a really great tour. Promote real music. And find myself along the way.
