Whodunnit live on air was a first in our 15 years of programming

Paul Golder writes for the Brentwood Gazette

We’ve put out about a hundred thousand hours of original radio programming over the last 15 years since we went full time, but we still had a first last Sunday – we performed a radio play live on air for the first time!

On a special edition of the Arts Programme a number of presenters and guests performed Dead Air, specially written by Brentwood residents Maureen and Keith, otherwise known as murder mystery party planners Clueso and Clueless.

Dead Air is a classic whodunnit, centring around a radio DJ who is murdered on air – with a host of characters from his past present who all have a motive for getting rid of him. And I should point out that there is no similarity to any characters on our own station!

I actually got to take part too, as dodgy lawyer Lou Pohl, a role which I found myself able to slip into worryingly easily.

The best part was that as actors we didn’t know whodunnit either, as the big reveal wasn’t in our scripts. This didn’t stop some of our listeners messaging the station during the play and guessing correctly.

If you missed it you can hear it again at www.phoenixfm.com – and you can get in touch with writers Maureen and Keith at mofieldhouse@hotmail.com.

PHOTO: L-R: Natalie Bays, Claire Gevaux, Mandy Cullen, Stewart Pink, Ben Simmons, Paul Golder, Margaret Abboyi, Spencer Carter, Nigel Fitzmaurice – plus Maureen and Keith ready to arrest the murderer.
