There have been so many mixed reports in the press about the benefits of wine, or not, depending on which report you read. It is confusing to say the least, so I’ve had a quick look through the main studies to see what they come up with.
Many of us enjoy a glass of wine in the evenings or at weekends, but how much and what type is important. We know its bad for the liver and can cause dementia, but other research says it can be good for us. However it can both cause and reduce the risk for cancer.
Washington University school concluded that a glass of wine a day can bring on an early death, regardless of age. Another survey found drinking 10 glasses of wine per week could cut as much as 2 years off your life. 7 glasses of wine can take off 15 minutes per week.
Under 45’s who binge on more than 4 glasses in one go can suffer from high blood pressure and contribute to heart disease.
2 glasses of wine can reduce sleep quality by 20%
University College in London found that drinking one glass of wine a day makes you less likely to suffer heart problems than tea-totallers. Little and often seems to be the key.
Women who drank moderate amounts inconsistently were at higher risk of heart problems than those who had a small glass every day.
Middle aged people drinking a medium glass of wine a day are less likely to suffer dementia than those who don’t drink.
So, maybe a little clearer that it’s definitely connected to quantity. A small or medium glass every day is a good tonic, but morew than that could put you on a downward slope.
