How much thought do we give to the health of our eyes? There is currently a virulenty new bug doing the rounds which can damage the eyes of contact lens wearers and even cause blindness. Moorfields Eye Hospital have issued a warning of the dangers associated with this bug and have asked us to be much more careful with our eyes in general.

Paying attention to hygene is essential. Although the disease can affect anyone but is more prevalent in contact lens wearers. Always make sure you wash your lenses in the appropriate cleaning fluid or at the very least, fresh clean water.

The risk os higher for those who don’t wash their hands before removing their lenses, and showering or swimming with your lenses in isn’t recommended.

Our eye health isn’t down to luck, there are many things we can do to keep them healthy. Try wearing goggles when swimming, and don’t keave your eyes open to bacterial infection. Contact lenses can absorb water around them which can make them distorted and blur vision.

Don’t use clumpy mascara, or any out of date eye make-up. All make up can harbour bacteria. Infected eye liner can cause many eye infections.

Sharpen all eye pencils before use, and make sure you are using good quality clean false lashes.

Get your eyes tested regularly, sometimes your optician can spot diseases before the doctor!

Children up to the age of 16 should be tested annually as their vision can change rapidly.

Of course, staring at screens and the blue light emitted is also not good, it can literally wear out your eyes, particularly if you use them at night. You can buy glasses with a special shield if you do have to spend a lot of time on your laptop or phone.

Wear sunglasses, even in the winter, as UV light can also be harmful.

Pop your sunglasses on and you’ll look good too!
