We’ve been giving lots of airplay this week to Mr Poison Apple Pie by One Hand Clapping, the brainchild of Australian multi-instrumentalist Andy Rig. We caught up with Andy to find out more about him and his music.

Hi Andy! Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a multi-instrumentalist – my main instruments are keyboards, guitar, bass, ukulele, harmonica, and drums.

My whole family is musical so I play by ear with no formal training.

In the early 90s I was discovered gigging around London by music legend Terry Ellis, who founded Chrysalis records, and had signed such major acts as Jethro Tull, Blondie, Pat Benatar, Billy Idol and others. I signed to BMG records but never released an album.

When did you first start to develop a passion for music?

I lost my mother at age 14 (Paul McCartney was the same!) and turned to music for comfort.

Which artists did you listen to while growing up?

I have four older brothers so grew up listening to their music – the Beatles, the Police. I love English rock mainly.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?

Melodic guitar rock – Crowded House meets Foo Fighters.

What music have you recorded and released to date?

Mr Poison Apple Pie is the debut release although we have a big back catalogue of songs to come.

When I was signed to BMG records, they sent me across the States to write with many hit songwriters – Martha Davis from the Motels, Steve Lunt who wrote for Cindy Lauper, Shannon Rubicam and Steinberg and Kelly.

Which artists do you enjoy listening to at the moment – and do they influence your work?

I’m currently listening to Ian Dury, Coldplay, Blur; from the States and Canada, I love Drake, Steely Dan – anything that is well crafted and truly original.

Who would your dream collaboration be with?

Coldplay.

What are your plans for the future?

If Mr Poison Apple Pie really gets some attention and captures your listeners’ interest, I’d like to release more songs from that same CD.
