We caught up with Canadian author, composer and performer Mahéli to talk about her music.
Please introduce yourself?
I present myself to you in notes or in colours: I am simply Mahéli.
I was wovened into the arts. I am made of words, melodies, songs, but also wool, painting, ceramic and visual arts. Creating is not only a way of life for me, it is oxygen! It is a continual process, which prompts me to always push myself to the limit.
Tell us about your songwriting?
I write lyrics to touch others and because my heart tells me to do it.
I love people, I love life. Maybe I’m still like a blue flower or I am idealistic, but I believe that songs have the power to change the world. I have been touched many times in my life by songs, which have either whipped me, challenged me, disturbed me, reassured me, questioned me or which were able to brilliantly put words into lived emotions. I also believe I can do it in my own way.
More than ever, I want to sing about the world that lives in me. I want to touch hearts, to bring beauty to this world and to celebrate life.
You released a CD in 2013 called CD “J’M L’HUMAIN” – what can you tell us about that?
I composed all the lyrics and melodies for this album called “J’m l’humain” (means “I love the human”), which I also perform. The arrangements are by Daniel Péloquin, with the invaluable participation of Michel Poirier for percussion, recording and mixing.
