Artist Feature: Sonny Parlin

We’ve been playing Sonny Parlin’s “Do My Thing” quite a lot on Phoenix FM lately and we spoke to Sonny about his life and loves in music.

Tell us a little bit about your yourself?

I’ve been a musician for over 30 years, and I’m currently married with one child, who’s now starting to learn guitar and bass. I love writing and recording music and I love collaborations even more. I’m also a martial artist. I have a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and I run an MMA academy in Bradenton, FL.

When did you first start to develop a passion for music?

When I was very young I remember my father playing guitar and singing all the time. He started teaching me when I was 14, and after a few lessons I was hooked.

Which artists did you listen to while growing up?

I was a metal head growing up, so I listened to Metallica, Dream Theater, Pantera and Sevendust.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?

I range from pop rock to hip hop and I’m a big fan of trying to include elements of fusion and jazz where they fit into those genres.

What music have you recorded and released to date?

I have an album out called Dynamism, which I released late last year so it’s still very new. I’ve also released a few singles since then. I’ve been really into hip hop lately and my latest releases reflect that.

Which artists do you enjoy listening to at the moment – and do they influence your work?

Dirty Loops, Jacob Collier and Kendrick Lamar are at the top of my playlist. All of them inspire me every time I listen to them!

Who would your dream collaboration be with?

Jacob Collier without a question.

What are your plans for the future?

I just plan on continuing to write, record and release music and hope people enjoy it.
