Body Talk 18/6/14

Joining me this evening was Mr Bhanot, Consultant Urologist at Spire Hartswood Hospital.

Urologists specialise in the function of the urinary system of men and women and  the male reproductive organs.

According to a survey of men aged 45 and over by Prostate Cancer UK, 70% of them knew nothing about their prostate and the symptoms of prostate cancer.

For men over 50 the most common problem is prostate enlargement. Older men are at risk for prostate cancer as well but it is less common.

The symptoms are difficulty passing urine, weakness in flow of urine, frequent urinating, sudden urges to urinate, an inability to empty the bladder or blood in the urine.

If a patient has these symptoms, tests can be done to ascertain the causes. These are blood tests, urine tests, PSA tests prostate cancer gene test or MRI scans.

Treatment depends on the diagnosis and there are several options available including surgery.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms, the first port of call is your GP  who will then refer you on for tests.
