Trainer John helps young people out in his own special way

Paul Golder writes for the Brentwood Gazette

The fight to improve mental health and wellbeing never stops, and takes all sorts of shapes and forms.

We had a fantastic visit last week from a truly inspiration local person who talked about what he’s doing to help.

John Ox is a boxing trainer who is involved in semi-professional white-collar boxing.

But he also trains young people aged 16-25 who struggle with their social and mental health.

John talked about his own East End upbringing and why he decided to devote his time and energy into a very worthwhile cause.

There’s a great deal of value in giving people direction and purpose, and John helps to do this in his own special way.

John’s ethos is that his training isn’t about asking people for money, it’s about people coming along on a journey together, seeing the difference it makes to kids’ lives.

You can hear John talking to Drive host Jo Bailey again at phoenixfm.com and you can find out more about John’s work through his Instagram @oxos_gym.
