You may have heard us playing Everything from Los Angeles singer/songwriter Shani recently – and we caught up with her to talk about her life in music.
Hi Shani – tell us a little bit about your yourself?
I’m a singer, songwriter and producer from LA.
When did you first start to develop a passion for music?
As a little girl of 3 or 4 years old, listening to music with my dad and singing along with him while he was playing the drums.
Which artists did you listen to while growing up?
My earliest influences would have been based on my dad’s collection – Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, The Commodores, Diana Ross and the Bee Gees. After this I moved on to Prince, Michael Jackson, Sting, Sade and many more.
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?
Rhythmic pop with R&B and international influences.
What music have you recorded and released to date?
3 solo albums and a ton of singles and soundtrack recordings. You can find many of these on Spotify.
Which artists do you enjoy listening to at the moment – and do they influence your work?
I love artists that set trends rather than follow them. I have a lot of friends in the industry and I support their work. I love those artists who blend genres and defy the odds if they are given a chance – artist such as Snoh Allegra, Bruno Mars, H.E.R, Billie Eilish. I have collaborations in the works with international icon Andy so I’m listening to a range of artists right now!
Who would your dream collaboration be with?
Sadly he has passed, but it would have to have been Prince.
What are your plans for the future?
To continue to write and record great songs, perform them for people and work on film projects that I feel connected to.
