Friday Night Extra 28.10.16

We concentrated on the music this evening, with a selection stretching from the 50s through to the top two albums in this week’s chart. We had a tribute to Bobby Vee, who passed away earlier this week. It is amazing that he got his big break as an emergency fill in for Buddy Holly after the tragedy. Bobby was fifteen years of age and his band had been formed just two weeks before the concert. We also remembered the career of comic writer David Perry, who gave us such classics as Dad’s Army and Hi Di Hi. We also looked at the career of Joe Meek, the highly innovative producer from the early 1960s.

Tonight’s playlist.
Booker T & MGs – Crazy
Phil Collins – Another day in paradise – for Chris listening to the recording.
Lulu – The man who sold the world – the chart version from 1974 of the Bowie song. Liked by listeners.
Michael Buble – My baby just cares for me. From the new album he produced himself.
Paul McCartney & Wings – Mull of Kintyre – requested by Phyl. The Christmas No 1 from 1977 and the first single to sell two million copies in the UK. Patrick e-mailed in to say he bought it. I owned up to buying two copies as Christmas presents.
Bobby Vee – Rubber Ball.
Bobby Vee – The night has a thousand eyes.
Pentantonix & Dolly Parton – Jolyne – for Anna, Steve & Caroline who liked it on Facebook.
Moody Blues – I know you are out there somewhere
Black – Wonderful life
Temptations – Cloud 9 – for Alison and Anna who saw them live, along with the Four Tops, on Wednesday in Nottingham.
Dad’s army theme – Bud Flannigan – remembering the writing career of David Perry.
Girl from Southend on Sea – Roy Budd. Played as I heard this on Eddie’s Kitchen during the week. What a title. A listener contacted and stated we do not need Ipenema any more!
Rod Stewart – Fly me to the moon – liked by some listeners, but not everyone.
Kinks – Autumn Almanac – Requested by Michael
Hugh Masekela – Grazin in the grass – a USA No 1 in the 60s for this South African trumpeter. Loved by Rene.
The Searchers – Don’t throw your love away – for Patrick who tried to learn the piano part in the 60s so he could play this track with his brother.
Beatles – Fixing a hole – loved by Matt, who was on the radio at 10.
Lady Antebellum – I run to you.
Elvis Presley & The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra – The wonder of you – this is No 1 in the album charts, making Elvis the most successful album artist in the UK, with 13 number ones.
Bucks Fizz – Now those days are gone – liked by Jonty as he thought it was perfect for the Brentwood School Barbershop Singers.
Kate Bush – The man with the child in his eyes – it is amazing to think Kate wrote the song at age thirteen and recorded it when she was fifteen years of age.
The Tornadoes – Telstar. From the Joe Meek stable. A USA & UK No 1 in 1962.
Van Morrison – Brown eyed girl – requested for Adrian who is the big 50 next week. Happy birthday.
Stevie Wonder – Another Star
Status Quo – Pictures of matchstick men. The news today that Rick Parfitt will no longer tour with the band, following a health scare. Also amazing to note that this track from 1968 was the only hit for Status Quo in the USA.
Nelson Riddle & his orchestra – Route 66.

Join me on Friday for another show where we let the music do the talking. In two weeks when my studio guest is Rob Scaggs, returning to give us the latest news about CHESS, the Chelmsford based charity working with the homeless.
