Friday Night Extra 22.1.16 An eclectic mix.

In tonight’s show we acknowledged that this week saw the passing of a number of figures from the world of popular music. Glenn Frey, a member of the Eagles and as a solo artist had sold over 120 million albums. Gary Loizzo was lead singer of the American Breed in the 1960s. He then went on to start his own recording studio. He had been the recording engineer for albums that sold over 25 million copies. Mic Gillette was a brass player in the band Tower of Power. His father was Ray Gillette, trombonist with Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, Stan Kenton and other big bands. Mic was playing trumpet and reading music from the age of four. He appeared on hundreds of recordings as a session player. In the news stories we heard about a church in Taiwan in the shape of a large glass slipper. In Russia the deputy chief of the prison service in the Komi region has been accused of stealing a 31 mile strip of road by selling 7,000 re-enforced concrete slabs. In Liverpool a cinema plans to show the film Groundhog Day 12 times in 24 hours on February 2nd, Groundhog Day. In China a man paid £8,400 for a car with 80,000 notes of denominations between 10p and 1p.
