Friday Night Extra 28.3.14 Mothering Sunday special with guest Terry Cattell-Hollox

Terry and her husband Richard were in the studio tonight for a show dedicated to Mothering Sunday. Terry talked about the reality that the Ancient Greeks and Romans had ceremonies dedicated to the importance of mothers and that every culture had something identifying the their significance. She talked about the history of the modern Mother’s Day celebrations in the U.S.A. and how in the UK these had become linked with the historic Mothering Sunday, which was a day when servants were allowed to go back to their families, visit their mother church and then spend time with their mothers. She also talked about personal experiences through living in the USA and UK. Our many respondents thought it was very interesting. The music tonight was a homage to Radio Caroline, which began 50 years ago this weekend. Without this station we would not have had commercial radio in the UK which had culminated ultimately in stations like Phoenix98FM. So we thought this was something to celebrate and we did so with a lot of music from that era. Terry and Richard stayed on and read a number of our odd news stories. These included all the men in North Korea being instructed to have their hair cut in the style of the leader. Also that their was a national shortage of fence panels, with prices rising in shops, people buying them on the black market, and then even being stolen from people’s gardens.

Tonight’s playlist
