It was a great privilege to sit in the studio with Sheila tonight and listen to her read extracts from her father’s World War One diaries. It was a very moving experience. As was commented in the chatroom it was extra-ordinary to realise that this was real and not a novel. Sheila read about his getting ready for war, being deployed to France and then Ypes, being shot and eventually returning to England. All this when he was a very young man. We had many positive comments, including from Lauren, who is a serving U.S. Marine in Newport Rhode Island. She reminded us that on 10th of November as we have Remembrance Sunday, it will be the 238th anniversary of the Marines. She asked us to remember all those who had served from both countries and those serving now, including her friend Jay who was listening tonight whilst on deployment. We heard from many regular listeners, and also had a request for John and Chris, first time listeners in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. The only extra news story we had tonight was about Ron Elliott who won £7,959,312 last Saturday on the National Lottery, went to work on Sunday at 6 a.m. in a local care home and intends to keep on working and spend some of his winnings in giving all the residents a great Christmas party.
