Friday Night Extra 4.11.16 Smooth sounds.

On a cold and damp evening in Brentwood, we kept the music smooth and chilled. Tracks were featured tonight from Bob Cranshaw, Curly Putman and Bap Kennedy, who had all passed away this week. Bob Cranshaw was a bassist. For over five decades he played with Sonny Rollins. He also worked in bands on Broadway accompanying many hit shows. On T.V. he was the bass player from 1975-80 on Saturday Night Live and the the Dick Cavert talk show in the early 1980s. He played on many albums, including Paul Simon’s ‘There goes Rimin Simon’. We featured American Tune from the classic L.P. Bap Kennedy was best known for writing the song Moonlight Kiss, which featured in the film, Serendipity. For many years he was in the band Energy Orchard and also recorded a number of solo albums. In recent years he toured with Mark Knopfler. We listened to Moonlight Kiss. Curly Putman wrote Green, Green grass of home and D.I.V.O.R.C.E., along with some other country classics. These recordings were much appreciated by listeners in the Nashville area who contacted the show tonight.

Tonight’s playlist.
Booker T & MGs – Crazy
Rick Astley – Pray – for Tom listening in Chelmsford and loving the album.
Aretha Franklin – I say a little prayer for you.
Eric Clapton – Autumn leaves. I asked listeners to guess who was singing. No-one got it right. Guesses included Gregory Porter, David Essex and Mark Knopler.
Sting – I can’t stop thinking about you – we commented this sounded just like a Police track.
Paul Young – Everytime I go away – requested by Patrick
Cliff Richard – Do you wanna dance? – requested by Phyl
Bap Kennedy – Moonlight Kiss
Simon & Garfunkle – Leaves that are green
Beverley Knight – Gold
Tom Jones – Green, green grass of home. Written by Curly Putman.
Tammy Wynette – D.I.V.O.R.C.E. Written by Curly Putman.
Fleetwood Mac – Albatross
Elvis Presley & The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra – Love letters
Rod Stewart – Moon river
Kinks – Waterloo sunset – requested by Michael.
Justin Hayward – Forever Autumn
Frank Sinatra – Autumn in New York – Sue in Kentucky said this made her think of a carriage ride in Central Park.
Glen Campbell – Gentle on my mind
Beth Neilsen Chapman – I find your love
Santana + Rod Thomas – Smooth – loved by Rene, who turned up the volume.
Paul Simon – American Tune – featuring Bob Cranshaw on base.
Beach Boys – California Girls – Leonard in Nashville wrote that is was the perfect summer song, top down on the car, warm sun and a cool breeze.
Charles Kelley _ The only one who gets me.
Shires – Made in England.
Dowie Bob – Slow down.
George Martin – Theme One.

Join me next week when my guests are Daria Paun and Head teacher Moira O’Regan from Margaretting C. of E. Primary school and Sophie Rose Egan from Ingatestone C. of E. Junior school talking about a dance event. I am also joined by Rob Scaggs from CHESS, the Chelmsford based charity working with homeless people.
