Friday Night Extra 18th January 2013

With e-mails saying people were huddled up trying to keep warm, we had a show on the demise of HMV and Record Shops by asking for the first record that people had bought. This proved a very popular nostalgic feature, with fifteen first buys. Artists were Kate Bush, Stevie Wonder, Cliff Richard, Sinaed O’Connor, Slade, Madness, Verve, Monkees, Thompson Twins, Elvis Presley, Steve Harley, Simon & Garfunkle, Paul Simon, Love Affair and Boomdown Rats. We also had tracks from Rumer, Rogrigo & Gabriella, Bruno Mars, Queen, Mott the Hoople, Caro Emerald and Marc Antionne. News stories included the sale of Freddie Mercury’s Rolls Royce, presents given to the Queen in 2012, a door step that turns out to have come from a Buddist Temple and is work £50,000, a cat that beat the experts at predicting the stock market and a very expensive tuna sold in Japan. This meant that for the next hour all the people in the chat room ended up swapping fish recipes! We certainly all had a good time, with lots of people listening on the net and in the chat room and of course on 98FM. The most snow we heard about was from Susam and Ian from near Reading. Let us hope the weather is better next week. But you have Phoenix to keep you warm.
