West Ham United Women have completed early business in the January transfer window with the additions of Kristie Mewis, Shelina Zadorsky and Katrina Gorry.

The Hammers have had an underwhelming season in the Women’s Super League so far, sitting level on points with bottom-of-the-table Bristol City in 11th place. The winter break has seen West Ham out of action since the middle of December and they return to league action with the visit of Tottenham Hotspur on the 21st of January.

United States midfielder Mewis was first to arrive at the Chigwell Construction Stadium, before experienced defender Shelina Zadorsky and Austrailian Gorry followed suit on Friday.

Mewis has spent the majority of her career in the United States but began in Australia with Canberra United. She made the move to the US in 2013 firstly with FC Kansas City before spells with Boston Breakers and Washington Spirit. During her time with Boston, the 32-year-old midfielder had loan stints in Japan and Germany with Iga FC Kunoichi and Bayern Munich respectively.

After departing Chicago Red Stars, Mewis had four years at Houston Dash but tore her ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) and spent ten months on the sidelines. Before making the move to East London, the experienced American had a successful spell with Gotham where she lifted the National Women’s Soccer League title.

Next through the entrance doors at West Ham was Zadorsky. It looks like Rehanne Skinner has opted for experience so far this transfer window and they have certainly got that with Zadorsky. Having appeared for the Canadian national team on just under 100 occasions and picked up a gold medal at the Tokoyo 2021 Olympics, she made the move to England with Tottenham Hotspur in 2020 following two years at Orlando Pride. Initially on loan, she made an impressive impact and the move was soon made permanent.

During the 2021/22 campaign, she was appointed as their captain as Spurs finished in fifth place which is their highest finish in the WSL. Zadorsky worked with Skinner at Tottenham and joins the Hammers on loan for the rest of the season.

The third addition saw Austrailian international Gorry sign on the dotted line following her departure from Swedish outfit Vittsjö GIK in November. She has played in six countries in a professional career spanning 15 years but she is yet to ply her trade in England.

Gorry played a vital role in Australia’s FIFA Women’s World Cup exploits in the summer alongside new West Ham teammate Mackenzie Arnold where they reached the semi-finals but were knocked out by the Lionesses.
