BRENTWOOD BOWLERS BRAVE ICY WINDS TO START 2024 SEASON

Hardy members of Brentwood Bowling braved the icy winds to kick-off their 2024 season with an informal Mixed Drive tournament at their headquarters in King George’s Playing Fields in Brentwood on Saturday April 20.

This ambitious and fast-growing club, which was originally formed in 1908, has seen a tremendous 20 per cent increase in playing members since the end of the 2023 season.

Now members are looking forward to a full and exciting programme of matches during what promises to be a hectic season which finishes in October.

As well as varied internal competitions, the club competes in Essex County and District events and also participates in NINE Men’s, Ladies and Mixed Leagues as well as playing a number of friendly games throughout the season.

Chairman Bob Theobald said: “The first day of the season was very cold but an encouraging number of members turned up for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of bowls.

“We must congratulate our excellent groundsman for all the hard work he has put in during the winter and I am sure that the 12 rinks on our two greens will produce some of the best playing surfaces in the county.”

The club has also carried out a lot of internal work at their clubhouse during the winter including the installation of a brand-new Accessible Toilet and improvements to the ladies’ dressing room.

So, do YOU want to try your hand at Lawn Bowls which is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and appeals to players of ALL ages?

Brentwood hold FREE taster sessions for any aspiring bowlers who wish to turn up and have a go EVERY Tuesday and Thursday morning (10 am – 12 noon) throughout the season. All equipment and coaching will be supplied.

The club will be also holding a special Bowls Bonanza Open Weekend on Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19. Once again anyone can have a go to see if they enjoy lawn bowling. More details later.

Chairman Theobald added: “We pride ourselves on being a very friendly and community-led club and everyone who turns up on a Tuesday or Thursday morning or to the Open Day Weekend will be given a very warm welcome. Our qualified coaches will be on hand to give assistance to any newcomers.”
