Tonight we featured a number of tracks that were covers of well known songs. We were looking for versions that added something different to the original. How many can you find in the playlist? Listeners particularly agreed with Jonty that the Jamie Cullum jazz version of Uptown Funk was amazing. Also the John Legend version of God only knows, turning it into a duet, brought a lot of responses. It was great to be joined on the phone by singer songwriter Lisa Harman for an interview about the motivation behind writing one of her own songs. A live broadcast from the studio is something we hope can happen. We will have another track next week. Having seen La La Land during the week, as had Jonty, we can both recommend it. The film is far more thought provoking than I expected and leaves you asking questions about the price paid to follow your dream. We heard tonight from Patrick and Jen, listening to us very early in the morning in Australia.
Tonight’s playlist
Booker T & MGs – Crazy
Billy Joel – My life
Nathalie Cole – Miss you like crazy
Elvis Presley – Blue moon
Lisa Harman – I can’t be myself. Lisa said this song was about an artist having to perform regardless of what had been going on in their life. Listeners thought it was a beautiful and thoughtful song. Phyl in London and Rene in Ingatestone both commented on Lisa’s voice, independently using the word “lovely”.
Joe Stilgoe – Waterloo Sunset
Tornadoes – Telstar – requested by Phyl
La la land soundtrack – Someone in the crowd – from a great sequence in the film.
Pentatonix & Dolly Parton – Joylene – winner of the 2017 Grammy award for country group performance.
Fairport Convention – Portmerion – an instrumental track, requested by Jackie, that we loved in the studio.
John Legend – God only knows
MonaLisa Twins – San Francisco
Beethoven in Havana – Symphony No 7 in rhumba style – yes it really does work!
Ray Stevens – Misty – this 1973 country style version of a jazz classic was requested by regular listener Patrick.
Moonlounger – Africa – acoustic cover
Peter Skellern – Your a lady – played in memory of Peter who died this week. John e-mailed in to remind us that Peter’s dying wish was to be ordained a priest in the C of E, which was granted in October 2016.
E.L.O. – Last train to London
Al Jarreau – Moonlighting theme – remembering Al who passed away this week.
Beach Boys – Sloop John B – the first of Jonty’s choices.
Jamie Cullum – Uptown funk
Cactus Blossoms – Your dreaming – a contemporary duo sounding uncannily like the Everly Brothers.
Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson – Say, say, say
Alison Krauss – another preview track from her new album released at the beginning of March
Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson – Say, say, say instrumental version
Join us next week when our studio guest in Christian singer songwriter Marina Bottelli Price, singing from her first album, A Very High Wall.
