Friday Night Extra 12.8.16 National Mackem Day

Paul from Billericay had contacted me via Twitter earlier in the day to tell me it was National Mackem Day. A Mackem is a person born in or around Sunderland, like Paul himself. We had tracks from The Lake Poets, Bryan Ferry and Dave Stewart. Paul commented that he listened to the show while watching the Olympics, as did Lee. There were a number of requests tonight. We continued our listen to the classic album, Dusty in Memphis, along with many other tracks from across the decades. We remembered Padraig Duggan founder member of Clannad, who died this week. They were the only band to sing in Gaelic on Top of the Pops. In the Finish city of Vantaa, near Helsinki, the Tikkurila library has installed karaoke booths. You can go and sing along for up to two hours to songs from a selection of over 3,000. In the Swedish town of Haparanda, part of the rejuvenation project has been to install unusual roadsigns. These include one pointing to “Midnight Sun” and another “Quality of life”. However, most notable are the signs at crossing the road. These include jive dancing, walking like Chuck Berry and Monty Python’s Ministry of Silly Walks. A spokeman said, “Haparanda has always dared to try something new”. We also learnt the song Jeremy Corbyn whistles to his cat El Gato to come in at night. Can you guess which song? You can find the answer in the playlist below. Listeners felt it was very hard to whistle it.

Tonight’s playlist.
Miles Davis – Summertime
Dixie Chicks – Wide open spaces
Andre Gold – Never let her slip away
Hot Chocolate – No doubt about it – for Derek who requested anything from the band.
The Lake Poets – Raining – Mackem Day Song – Paul in Billericay responded that it does rain a lot in the North East of England.
Fairport Convention – Festival Ball – requested by Phyl for all those attending the Cropready festival this weekend.
Rick Astley – Keep Singing – for Anna in Portugal and the ten others who responded to my Facebbok message about playing this track tonight.
Heart – Alone – requested by Patrick
Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin – Busy doing nothing – Mackem Day track as Dave comes from the area.
Dion – Abraham, Martin and John – the original US hit version.
Pandemonium Drummers and friends – Champion – a charity track to download raising money for Cancer Research.
Will Smith – Theme from Fresh Prince of Bel Air – for Michael in Colchester Hospital
Mona Lisa Twins – God only knows – a great teenage band. We shall feature them again.
Focus – Sylvia
Joni Mitchel – Help me
Beatles Taxman – to celebrate 50 years since the release of Revolver
Tom Chaplin – Heardened heart – a song Paul in Ingrave had drawn my attention to this track from the new solo album by the lead singer of Keane.
Charles Keeley & Stevie Nicks – Southern Accents – track from the solo album by the lead singer of Lady Antebellum.
Dusty Springfield – I don’t want to hear any more – from Dusty in Memphis
Clannad – Theme from Harry’s Game
Dawn – Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree – Jeremy Corbyn’s song to whistle to bring his cat in at night.
Bryan Ferry – Avalon
Bryan Ferry Jazz Orchestra – Avalon – final two Macham Day tracks.
Zombies – And we were young again
Diana Ross – Summertime
Spirit – Taurus – with the news that whilst Led Zepplin won the case that Stairway to Heaven was not based on this track, they lost this week the appeal for the $800,000 lawyers fees.
