With no guests tonight and Jonty away on holiday, it was just you, me and the music. The e-mails were busy with requests and comments. Thanks to all who were in touch. We had two stories that caused comment. The Police in Vietnam gave a motorist 50 lines to write, ‘I will not drive the wrong way up a one-way street’. She sat and wrote them at the kerb side. About a year ago we had a story about three restaurants in China having robots as waiters. Tonight we learnt that this was a good way to get people initially to the premises, but the robots were not up to the job. Two of the restaurants have closed. The other now has just one robot as a novelty and has re-employed waiters. Apparently the reason for the failure was the inability of the robots to deal with erratic and unpredictable customers. So it was the fault of humans! This led us to speculation as to whether robots could undertake the job of any of the listeners. A flurry of e-mails gave a resounding no. However, Chris in Harlow, wanted to be able to make a robot teacher so she could retire and be very rich.
