The Greek island of Lesvos is experiencing a humanitarian refugee crisis.
By this month, almost 14 million Syrians had fled their homes as a result of the Syrian Civil War. Close to 8 million are internally displaced within Syria, and over 6 million have sought refuge in neighbouring Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. Hundreds of thousands have migrated onward into the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe, many of them via Lesvos. As of February 2016, the United Nations (UN) has identified 13.5 million Syrians requiring humanitarian assistance.
Sean Wright has been volunteering on Lesvos to help with the crisis there and I’m pleased to say that Sean joined me in the studio today to tell us about his experiences on the island in what turned out to be a fascinating and moving interview.
