What a treat we all had tonight. I was joined in the studio by ten barbershop singers from Brentwood School. Ollie Valentini from the group told us about the singers, how they had sung at a number of events and that they had been practising for tonight. A short video of the practice can be found on Youtube by searching for Brentwood School Barbershop. They sang six items tonight with obvious enjoyment in the studio which was much appreciated by the listeners. Comments included, ‘I really loved it’, ‘I cannot wait for the recording so I can listen again’ and ‘what a great thing for them to be doing. Well done, it was brilliant’. We had a number of requests during the show and the music mix was diverse. Jonty, who was one of the singers, stayed with me to read some of the unusual news items from the week. These included a small Italian hill town where the first baby had been born for 28 years! Also a Spanish civil servant who had been absent from work for six years, still being paid his salary, and was only missed when he became eligible to receive a long service medal. You could not make it up.
