“The Lie” by Helen Dunmore, (paperback, fiction,) published 2014 by Windmill Books, price £7.99 In 1920, Daniel returns to Cornwall, after service in the trenchesduring World War 1. Trying to ease himself back into civilian life, he begins working on the land, and forms a friendship with the widowed sister of a former comrade-in-arms. As the book progresses, it reveals more about Daniel’s life story, what happened in the War and the consequences of lies and deceit.
