Among the topics we discussed this week were the Bank Holiday Monday fixtures for our local non-league sides. Match reports below…

Braintree 2 – 0 Nuneaton Town
Braintree lost 3-2 at Lincoln City on Saturday and were aiming to get their campaign back on track at home on Monday. Nuneaton were the visitors and had yet to score a goal in the Conference. That stat didn’t change as Braintree were dominant yet failed to score until after Ben Hutchinson was sent off for Nuneaton with 74 minutes gone. Braintree upped the pressure and Mitch Brundle scored from a free kick with 10 minutes to play, Michael Bakare making the game safe in the 89th minute.

Bishop Stortford 2 -3 Chelmsford City
Following Saturday’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Sutton United at Melbourne Park, Chelmsford returned to action on Monday at Bishop Stortford’s ProKit stadium. On a horrendous day for playing football, the Clarets were made to wait until the 58th minute to open the scoring, the goal coming through Luke Callandar. Callandar and Chelmsford doubled their advantage a minute later and Michael Cheek scored his first of the campaign on 73 minutes. The Clarets were cruising until a quickfire double by Anthony Church and Mikel Suarez (from the penalty spot) made the last 10 minutes nervy. But Chelmsford held on to secure their first win of the season.
“Not quite Cheek and Cally go ballistic, Stortford are atrocious” as was billed by one contributor, but 4 points from 2 games over the Bank Holiday weekend will do Mark Hawkes nicely.

Billericay Town 2 – 0 East Thurrock
Following Saturday’s 5-1 mauling away to big spending Margate, Billericay sampled home comforts on Monday. The poor weather made it into a kick and run affair with Seedy Njie doing a thankless task up front as the target man. East Thurrock certainly looked the brighter of the two sides and played some good football on the deck amid poor tackles from both teams. Ultimately though, the game was decided by a goal from Junior Appiah which looped over the East Thurrock keeper after a scramble in the area and a well struck Richard Halle free kick, giving Billericay the victory.
