Mud N Madness

Video by Mike Jones

They’ve been baiting each other for weeks and today was the day of reckoning … would the weeks of training and trash talking pay off? The annual Mud N Madness event, in aid of St Francis Hospice and taking place at Stubbers Adventure Centre in Upminster, kicked off this morning at 9am.

There wasn’t much mud around but as February mornings go it was almost perfect – cold but not too brisk with no wind or rain. No chance that Bryan and Rob wouldn’t suffer though – in addition to random assault courses and canoeing and archery tests over the 7.5km (4.67 miles), the competitors had to wade through an icy-cold lake!

Bob Simpson spoke to Rob and Bryan before they set off and then followed them round the course, and also managed to have a word with the CEO of St Francis Hospice, Pam Court, about the success of this year’s event which saw the number of competitors double compared to last year. You can hear Bob’s report on the morning’s efforts below:

Rob completed the course in 1 hour 8 mins and 40 seconds with Bryan just 5 seconds behind. A great achievement from both of them.
