Late night extra Friday 16th of November 2012

Thick fog as I drove in tonight. Barbara Hallows came to talk with us about the VADs. This was fascinating. These were women, often from aristocratic or wealthy backgrounds, who volunteered to help nurses in the two World Wars.  She told us that over 1,000 of them lost their lives. The VAD Ladies Club now trading as  The New Cavendish Club was formed in 1920 to give VAD nurses somewhere to meet in London. A National Memorial Appeal has been launched to erect a memorial at the National Arboretum in Staffordshire to record the names of all nurses, including VADs, who lost their lives in these conflicts. More information is available at www.facebook.com/nursing/MemorialAppeal and

www.newcavendishclub.co.uk/nursingmemorialappeal

Requested music tonight included Fleetwood Mac, Take That, Robbie Williams and Jos Stone. We also heard from Adele, Toto, Chicago, Dolly Parton, Joni Mitchel, Dave Koz, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Kenny G, Gerry Rafferty, Flying Lizards and others.

Join me next week for a revisit from our Ingatestone Postmen Dennis and Steve to see how they got on with their aid trip to Kosovo.
