Friday Night Extra 27.3.15 with guest Revd. Paul Hamilton, Rector of Ingrave and karate teacher.

Paul joined us this evening straight from teaching a karate class, wearing a white gi. In a fascinating interview, much appreciated by those who contacted the show, Paul began by talking about his early life in Blackpool. Here his parents had sent him to Sunday School, even though they did not attend the church. As a child in Blackpool he loved playing with the video games in the arcades and this developed into an interest with computers. He began working with computers and was earning very good money selling computer systems to small businesses. However, he felt that there should be more to life. A chance encounter with a street evangelist had angered him, but also left a nagging feeling inside. This had eventually developed into seeking to know more and unexpectedly seeing this evangelist again at a meeting. Paul learnt about the Church Army and eventually worked for them, including a time at Canvey Island. When he had been asked to consider the post he thought it was Canary Island! Paul is now Rector of Ingrave, with two churches, and loves the ministry. He described his enjoyment of doing things with people and called it “the best job in the world”. He chose three tracks that were important to him with the memories they generated.

In the second hour we had some unusual news stories. They was the re-uniting of a man with a wallet lost behind a bookcase at Lambeth Palace sixty five years ago. The wallet contained the only photo of the owners’ father. There was an artist who had produce a Madonna and child, carved out of toast! A butcher in the Borders area was selling Scotch Eggs with a Cadbury’s Cream Egg inside! There was also the Indian music sensation of Layla translated into Sanskrit. We played the original.
