Some time ago I got the chance to talk with local publisher and author, Audrey Snee who should have been with me today had she not been prevented from coming in through ill health. In her publishing guise, Audrey’s company has just published a book by PETER BROWN and CHRIS POOLE about an iconic Essex based TV and RADIO manufacturer that was a leading light in the industry for more than 40 years. The company was of course EKCO which was founded in the 1920’s by a Southend man, E K COLE. Unfortunately CHRIS POOLE died before the book was published so it was with PETER BROWN that I got to talk today. Apart from making the UK’s first portable TV, EKCO were also heavily involved in much secret work during the last war, which given close pre-war links with German firms, was a bit of an anachronism! Anyway take a listen to what Peter told me here: – Peter Brown Interview

We also heard about some classic excuses received by the taxman from people who failed to submit their tax returns in time. It seems that one man was prevented from completing his tax return as he was in mourning for his goldfish which had unexpectedly shaken off its mortal coil. Incredible!
