Continuing our decades-long mission to promote every single bit of culture in the town, we welcomed back David Worsfold from the Brentwood Choral Society last week.

David has been in on a number of occasions to promote the town’s choir. They are a friendly, local, mixed voice choir, rehearsing weekly in term time, presenting a traditional choral repertoire whilst embracing new works and ideas. Concerts are a mix of the choral greats and light classical music.

David was in the studio to talk to Michelle Ward about one such concert, which is taking place in Brentwood School’s Wessex Auditorium on Saturday 25 March – Misa a Buenos Aires by Martin Palmeri.

The concert features bandoneon player Julian Rowlands, who often plays on Strictly Come Dancing. He has also appeared on The One Show, Zingzillas, Surprise Surprise, and on BBC national radio.

Misa Tango, composed by the Argentine composer Martin Palmeri is a choral mass based on a tango sound. It is composed on the same movements as a mass in classical Latin, but uses the harmonics and syncopated rhythms of tango.

The programme also includes a solo piece performed by Julian, Karl Jenkin’s Benedictus from The Armed Man, Will Todd’s The Lord is my Shepherd and Carlos Gardel’s Por Una Cabeza.

And yes, I had to Google bandoneon! It’s a type of concertina particularly popular in Argentina and Uruguay.
