Jeanne Saggs from CHESS Homeless updated us on the on-going work of the charity, which now works in eight local authorities across Essex. There are now sixty six bed spaces available. Jeannie emphasised that CHESS aims to move people on from being street homeless to living independently in settled accommodation and with employment.

During 2022 one hundred and forty people went through this transition.

Jeannie said that anywhere you see a homeless person throughout the country, the best action is always to contact https://www.streetlink.org.k/

The charity is always engaged in fundraising and there are two fundraising events up-coming.

Saturday 24th of June at Chelmsford Cathedral 7.30-9.30 Rock Choir with a night of summer music. Tickets £7.50 – £12.50. Suitable for all ages.

Tickets are available via the CHESS Homeless website.

Experience what it is really like to sleep out in freezing weather. 8 p.m. –  8 a.m. November 11th. Keep the date. Booking available soon.

There are numerous ways to volunteer to help CHESS, including cooking and various administrative tasks. If you offer to help, CHESS will seek to use whatever skills you have to help. At the moment recruitment is happening for some paid Support Worker positions.

Mick Hucknell, lead singer with Simply Red, recently celebrated his 63rd birthday. We heard the band’s  debut single from 1985 –Money’s too tight to mention- UK no 13, New Zealand no 8, USA no 28, Top forty in a total of seven countries.

Tom Grennan is 28 years old. We heard the 2021 track – A little bit of love – UK no 7, Poland no 2, Ireland no 6, Belgium no 7.

Tom Jones is now 83 years old. We herd the theme for the fourth James Bond film – Thunderball. Very surprisingly, only no 35 in the UK, no 25 USA, No 6 in Austria and Belgium, no 10 in Canada.

Thanks to Chris, Sarah and Bob in Harlow, Chris in Guildford, Jeanne in the studio, Sian in Manchester and Patrick in Ingatestone for taking part. The joint winners with three points each were Chris in Harlow and Sian in Manchester.

Patrick requested a track from the 1970s. We heard Johnny Cash – A thing called love – UK no 4 in 1972.

Stan Getz (Astrid Gilberto on vocals) – Girl from Ipanema. Astrid passed away recently. Grammy record of the year 1965. According to Wikipedia, the most recorded song apart from Yesterday. UK no 29, USA no 5 in 1964.

Quincy Jones – Soul Bossa Nova – 1962 track that will be forever associated with the Austin Power series of films.

Beatles – With a little help from my friends – Track from 1967 Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band – no 1 album this week in 1967. No 311 in Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of all time. 

Chart this week in

No 6. This cover of a Bob Dylan song, turned into a psychedelic classic, was a UK no 5 and no 13 in Canada. This track has come to represent the psychedelic era. It was re-recorded for the theme of the comedy series, Absolutely Fabulous.

N0 11 Scott Walker – Joanna – UK no 7. Second single release.

No 12 Louis Armstrong –  What a wonderful world. UK no 1 . Louis was 66 years old, making him the oldest artist to have a no 1 at that point in chart history. USA no 32 in 1989 after being featured in the soundtrack of the film, Good Morning Vietnam.

Honey & the Bear – Why am I always saying sorry – They are playing at the Thaxted Festival on 24th of June.
