This week I began the show with a salute to the Lionesses – the England Women’s team who after some fantastic performances had made Football officially ‘come home’ the previous Sunday, winning Euro 22 by beating Germany 2-1 in the final at Wembley after extra time.
In honour of this, I re-ran a conversation between my Phoenix FM colleagues Stewart Pink and Jo Bailey which had taken place on Stewart’s Drive show a couple of days previously.
Jo spoke of her love for both the women’s game and West Ham United – where she is a season ticket holder for both the men’s and women’s sides – as well as her roles as co-chair of West Ham’s Pride Of Irons and women’s officer for Pride In Football.
Meanwhile in the men’s game, the Premier League got underway this weekend and Leyton Orient made it two wins out of two in EFL League Two, a 49th minute goal from Tom James proving enough to give them a 1-0 win away to Crawley Town.
The National League was also back on Saturday, and Dagenham & Redbridge staged a late comeback to clinch a 2-2 draw at home to Gateshead.
Southend United’s season got off to a disappointing start, as they were beaten 1-0 by Boreham Wood at Roots Hall.
Mixed fortunes for our three National League South sides on the opening day of their season saw Concord Rangers clinch a 1-0 victory at Hungerford Town, veteran debutant Ricky Modeste scoring the only goal of the game.
Chelmsford City began 2022/23 with a 1-1 draw against St Albans City at Melbourne Park, whilst new Braintree Town manager Angelo Harrop saw his side beaten 2-1 away to Dulwich Hamlet.
The FA Cup also got underway this weekend with the Extra Preliminary Round.
A number of our local non-League sides from steps four, five and six were involved including Romford, who scored an impressive 5-2 victory over fellow Essex Senior League outfit Saffron Walden Town in our featured tie.
Joe O’Sullivan reported for us for the first time, providing regular and comprehensive updates on what sounded a very entertaining match.
In the Essex Cricket League, Wanstead & Snaresbrook continued to set the pace at the top of the 1st XI Premier Division, following their victory over visitors Chelmsford by three wickets.
