When a job’s worth doing

We reported today on what might just be the job you always wanted – going on a pub crawl and getting paid nearly £30k pa!

Yes, truly Lincolnshire County Council is looking for someone to tour and document boozers located along a 50-mile stretch of the coast between Grimsby and Oldham.

The role is part of a pilot project from Historic England called Inns on the Edge, and will involve ‘researching and recording the architectural and social history of public houses along the 50 mile stretch of the Lincolnshire Coast” so as to better inform management on their future conservation.

The salary up for grabs will be up to £28,672 for the right applicant, who apparently should be educated to degree level in a relevant field such as building conservation or archaeology – but not just in getting “wasted”.

The advertisement for the job states that this is a post which they urgently need to fill, and aims to enhance the local historic environmental records, raise awareness in response to the threat of pub closures, and help the hospitality sector to recover from the pandemic.

A good working knowledge of the region’s heritage, and of the architectural and social history of pubs is desirable,  as is a good understanding of the social and economic role of public houses in rural and urban communities today, and the challenges they currently face.

If this sounds like the job for you, note that you’ll also need excellent communication skills, experience of carrying out research, organisational skills and time management.

Later in today’s programme we heard about someone for whom, even this job would be a chore.

An Italian hospital worker is apparently being investigated, having been on full pay for 15 years without ever having turned up for a single shift!

The 66-year old, code named, “Part Time”  is alleged to have drawn almost half a million pounds in wages since he last turned up for work at the Pugliese Ciaccio hospital, located in the Calabrian city of Catanzaro, back in 2005.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Catanzaro has accused the man of using a variety of tactics to prevent a return to work, including allegedly threatening the hospital director from filing a disciplinary report about his absenteeism.

That director resigned and her successor was never made aware of the situation, meaning his absence continued without the human resources department knowing that anything was amiss.

However 6 other managers are being investigated about their knowledge, or role in helping with the employee’s alleged on-going absenteeism.

No-one seems to know what suddenly brought the issue to light but the Italian government tightened up legislation in 2016 aimed at cutting down on the level of public sector workers being absent from work.

Seemingly it was not uncommon for staff to turn up for a shift only to promptly go off canoeing, shopping or going out with friends.

Others were using the lax laws to simply clock on and then head back home to bed!

Well although I’m not skiving I won’t be here tomorrow but all being well I’ll see you again on Wednesday,
Scott
