Today we heard of the sad plight of the man fined for falling asleep on his train home.
Like many of us have done, he woke up just as the train was pulling out of his intended stop so he planned to get off at the next stop and head back by the next train.
Unfortunately he was challenged by ticket collectors and fined the cost of the whole fare from London, rather than the extra £2:70 being the cost of the extra journey.
This in spite of having a valid season ticket for which he had paid £4250.
When his appeal failed he was ordered to cough up more money and threatened with a £1000 fine and imprisonment if he failed to do so.
The matter was only resolved after a local newspaper took up his case with the railway company involved who, presumably in the face of adverse publicity, backed down.
In the last hour of the show, Margaret Mills returned to look at an amazing character from Orsett – Col. Francis Whitmore.
