There were few surprises – both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats gained one seat from each other, Labour held onto Brentwood South after a recount and UKIP failed to make any inroads.

James Tumbridge regained Shenfield for the Conservatives, which they lost in 2012 after their candidate, former mayor Margaret Brehaut, moved out of the area.

Hairdresser Nigel Clarke, who defected from the Liberal Democrats to the Conservatives while serving as a councillor in 2012, gained Warley for the Lib Dems after another former mayor, David Tee, decided not to stand.

Here are the results. All wards elected one councillor except Tipps Cross who elected two.
