I was once again privileged to be sitting in on the prestigious DRIVE show today for the equally prestigious MIKEY PORTER. I say “sitting” although in truth I should probably have been standing stiffly to attention, especially whilst talking to my guest, Carole McEntee-Taylor. Carole has just had a book published about the Military Detention Centre in Colchester. Now I know I was right to steer well clear of all things connected with the military, even to the extent of not joining the CCF when I was at school. Thank heavens I also just missed National Service! In her book, Carole paints a picture of even prisoner escorts, being screamed at, forced to move “on the double” and threatened for imagined misdemeanours by staff at the centre.
Mercifully times have changed so hopefully detainees will no longer be forced to polish hot coals, paint the inside of a bucket containing water and moving piles of sand from one place to another without leaving a trace. Never mind we are assured that everyone was treated with the utmost respect! Listen again here to what Carole told me about the book and “COLLY” – the Detention Centre itself: –
On a lighter note we started the show with THE 3’OCLOCK THRILL – 3 “belters” back-to-back. Today’s selection was “HIP TO BE SQUARE” from Huey Lewis and the News, “THINK” by Aretha Franklin with Starship winding up the set with their 1985 hit,”WE BUILT THIS CITY”.
And of course, as usual we did our bit to help you on your journey home with all the latest travel news served up with a mix of some of the best current music, together with a sprinkling of recent classics.
Mikey will be back as usual tomorrow and I’ll see you again soon.
