East Thurrock United v Hampton & Richmond – LIVE

East Thurrock United  0-1  Hampton & Richmond

Brentwood Town  3-2  Great Wakering Rovers

Mansfield Town  3-0  Dagenham & Redbridge

Wycombe Wanderers  2-1  Southend United

———-

FULL TIME:  As I said, one of those days.  Any other time the Rocks may have won comfortably, but that’s how soccerball goes sometimes.  Credit to the visitors, they dug in, and made their own luck.  Something East Thurrock United were right out of.  Ah well.

4 – ETU 0-1 H & R Full Time

Next up will probably be Brentwood Town on Monday.  Or maybe Billericay on Tuesday.  Until then, enjoy yourself, and your football.

———-

9oth min + 2 – Unbelievable Jeff.  Our man Rodney the Refresher pulls off a magnificent save, deflecting a Leon McKenzie piledriver onto the crossbar and over.  Wow.

90th min + 1 – Luke Wanadia’s overhead kick is parried away for a corner.  Which comes to zilch.  Bah.

Injury time:  And very probably a late winner for Brentwood.  Phew.

85th min – The Rocks furiously try to receive the situation , and from around 18 yards, Leon McKenzie hammers a shot in that Chiweshie does really well to parry clear.

81st min – GOAL! ….. East Thurrock United 0,  HAMPTON & RICHMOND 1  Real controversy.  A corner was being aimlessly headed high and wide, the home defence thought it had gone off, the lino and ref said no, it was put back into the six yard box, a scramble, and ALAN BRAY slotted home.

3 – ETU 0-1 H & R

A real talking point.

80th min – More East Thurrock pressure, and Chiweshie does really well to get down low at the left hand post to stop a  Sheehan shot from going in.

78th min – Mitchell Gilbey and Grant Eagle come on for the hosts, replacing Nathan Korateng and Lea Dawson.

77th min – Oh my!  What an opportunity!  Under no pressure, on the edge of his own area, Rodney Chiweshie kicks the ball straight to Tom Stephen from 30 yards out.  With an open goal gaping, he shanks horribly high and wide.

75th min – Steve Sheehan obviously was looking for some sort of payback and is also booked for a tackle from behind.  Bit of the Nigel Niggles creeping in now.

73rd min – Karle Carder, the visiting midfielder, is pulled up sharpish for a crude tackle on Lea Dawson.  He’s booked – and then substituted immediately, presumably for his own good.  Elsewhere – ouch, Brentwood Town have let slip a two goal lead.  Hmmmmm.

69th min – The Rocks are pressing but …. ah, well, you get the feeling it’s one of those days.  It’s certainly not restricted to Rookery Hill though.  There’s not a single goal so far in this afternoon’s Premier League games.  Cracking value for anything up to £60 a pop.

62nd min – Yep, I said that to tempt fate, and it almost worked.  Lovely run again from Wanadia on the right, he cuts inside the area, runs the ball to Connor Witherspoon, and his on-target shot at the Manorway End goal is superbly parried by Rodney Chiweshie and hacked away by the visiting defence.  Grand stuff.

60th min – Plenty of neat possession from the hosts, from defence and midfield, but with selection problems meaning only able to play one upfront, clear-cut opportunities are fewer than Hearts points total.

55th min – Getting back to footballing action, Luke Wanadia has a decent run down the right, gets to the bye-line and creeps into the area.  His low shot is on target but well collected at the near post by Refresher man Chiweshie.

52nd min – First spark of controversy.  East Thurrock win a free kick, then while an H & R defender holds onto the ball to stop the kick being taken, Leon McKenzie pushes him rather vigorously and fierecly in the chest.  The ref gives McKenzie a yellow card.  Other officials may not have been so lenient.

48th min – Just for a second, after a throw-in on the left, Connor Witherspoon looks through on goal inside the area, but as we anticipate the shot, Malvin Kamara steps in and clears the danger.  Nice start by the Rocks this half though.

4.06pm – KICK OFF!  Bit late innit.

———-

HALF TIME:  And it’s been an okay goalless first 45 minutes.  The Rocks have been knocking the ball around well, but the visitors have shown spells of danger too.  It’s been almost an evenly balanced first, with the Rocks having the slightest of edges.  Not bad at all.

2 – ETU 0-0 H & R

Right, off for a Limeade and a Haribo.  Laters.

———-

45th min – As the game winds its way to half time, Tom Stephen marauds forward to try and get something going on the left.  He links up well with Nathan Korateng, which breaks down, but then stays upfield, collects a ball on the edge of the area, and shoots about 3 inches over the bar.  Good stuff.

38th min – A few meaty tackles going in, but the ref to his credit lets the game flow, and from that the Rocks win a corner on the left.  From that Leon McKenzie flashes a far post header wide.

35th min – Nothing too much going on here in the past few minutes.  But elsewhere – yes!  My buddy Stevie boy puts Wycombe 2-1 up against Sarfend.  Can’t help feeling chuffed for him.

29th min – And again H & R, finding success down the left this time.  Moon is thwarted by Darren Bechet rushing off his line to collect, then from another break by Simon Peddie covering back.

27th min – Back come Hampton & Richmond, and a cross from the right is whipped in, finding the head of Charlie Moon on the edge of the six yard box.  The cross is too pacy, though, and the ball hits his head rather than him heading it, ballooning over.

25th min – Luke Wanadia is causing all sorts of problems down the right, and his centre into the Bus Stops End box reaches Leon McKenzie.  He loops his shot over but still, more signs of menace from the hosts.

23rd min – A moment of danger from the visitors.  A free kick, central, a smidgeon over 25 yards out.  Luckily, the trusty boot of Joel Ledgister ensures it goes well over the bar.  Something I remember from his Southend United days.  Chortle.

19th min – Lovely bit of play from Ryan Sammons.  He closes down and blocks an H & R attack, then sends a slide rule pass that Nathan Korateng is onto in a flash.  He’s stopped on the edge of the area, but liquid football, Sammo.

15th min – East Thurrock are settling down well, without creating anything more clear-cut these past few minutes.  Elsewhere, Brentwood Town take their lead in the awkward FA Cup tie.  Hurrah and huzzah!

10th min – And again the hosts cause problems.  A simple Ryan Sammons throw-in is allowed to bounce inside the area, and Lea Dawson is onto it.  His shot lacks power, and is comfortably held by the superbly name Rodney Chiweshie in the H & R goal.  Great shirt as well.  Reminds me of a tube of Refreshers.  Chortle.

6th min – And the Rocks get into their stride.  A good cross wide on the right, level with the penalty area, from Luke Wanadia, and Connor Witherspoon finds space in the the box, his looping header going just over the bar.  Spiffing stuff.

2nd min – First chance falls to the visitors.  A long ball, chase, and Charlie Moon blazes over the Manorway End goal from about 20 yards.

3.03pm – KICK OFF!  Oh yes!

———-

2.59pm – The teams come out to the usual apathy, the Rocks in their normal amber shirts and black shorts and socks, Hampton & Richmond in light blue shirts and socks with white shorts.  All fashioned by Stella McCartney and a sweat shop in Thailand.

2.55pm – Oh my, it’s lovely and sunny here.  Make the most of it, everyone, with the onset of the X Factor, it means bad weather, depressing tv, and people with faces you just can’t punch enough.  A bit like living in Middlesbrough.

2.50pm – Team News:  East Thurrock United go with:

1. – Daren Bechet

2. – Ryan Sammons

3. – Tom Stephen

4. – Simon Peddie

5. – Steve Sheehan (c)

6. – Connor Witherspoon

7. – Luke Wanadia

8. – Stuart Thurgood

9. – Leon McKenzie

10 – Lea Dawson

11. – Nathan Korateng

SUBS:

12. – Mitchell Gilbey

14. – Craig Hughes

15. – Grant Eagle

17. – David Hughes

So, the Rocks again have a squad about as recogniseable as your average Heart of Midlothian libe-up.  Plenty of enthusiasm, though, a decent manager, and as some have already shown, some good, good players.  Hurrah!

2.45pm – Elsewhere, Brentwood Town have a tricky FA Cup tie to negotiate.  Great Wakering Rovers top the Essex Senior League and have a number of players who can and should be playing at a much higher level.

With Billericay Town’s game against Grays Athletic being put back to Sunday at Aveley, it just leaves our local League Two sides also in action.  Both have tricky looking away games.  I must, however, declare an interest, being mates with the Wycombe centre forward, so my legendary lack of bias will ensure an even handed take on things.  But come on Wanderers, and go on Steve lad.

1 – ETU v H & R Preview

2.40pm – Yo, hello kiddiwinks and everyone, welcome to a gloriously sunny Rookery Hill, as we see out the summer in style this afternoon.

Well, the Rocks are defying all pre-season predictions – including possibly a few from themselves too – by holding down a comfortable mid-table place with a young and inexperienced squad.  10 points from their first half a dozen games has been an excellent return so far.

Standing in their way are a team just 16 months ago were a Conference South outfit.  Now they find themselves still seeking their first win, in the drop zone on just two points.  They so need a win to kick-start their campaign.  It has the makings of yet another cracker.

As ever, simply refresh the page every few minutes, and the thrill of a Saturday afternoon in Corringham will be yours, all yours.

GAME ON!

GAME ON!
