Mixed Derby Day Results As Warriors Brush Aside Airlie Final Challenge

With this weekend’s localised floods washing out the cricket, it was left to our winter sports to keep things ticking over.

Billericay Town, sadly, also had their Ryman Premier derby at Canvey Island postponed, but East Thurrock United had no such problems, sauntering to a 3-0 win over Grays Athletic.  Grimmer news for Brentwood Town in Ryman One North, though, going down 1-3 at Tilbury.

Luckily, the featured live game on Between The Lines came from Wembley Stadium, as Hull FC bid to upset the odds and Wigan Warriors to grab rugby league’s Challenge Cup in front of a soaked Final crowd of 78,000.

3 - Kick Off

Summariser Joe and myself were looking forward to it.

1 – Wigan v Hull Preview

The first half was tense and absorbing, nip and tuck, with hardly anything in it.  The half time scored reflected this as the feeling grew the the Humbersiders could spring a suprise.

2 – Hull 0-6 Wigan HT

The feeling, sadly, was wrong.  In a hugely disappointing second half, Wigan Warriors strolled to a comfortable win, topped off with a piece of Sam Tomkins magic in the dying seconds.  You couldn’t help feeling that Hull had underperformed.

3 – Hull 0-16 Wigan FT

So the Wigan Warriors march on.  Can they make it a Super League double?  Well, nobody could tell by today, as they were so inadequately tested.  The main thing is, though, sport was at least brought to the airwaves!
