FULL TIME:  And what an incredible afternoon it’s been at the Arena.  We may have broke our draw duck, but nine goals, near misses, shouting, swearing, and the smell of stew.  A fabulous 90 minutes.  It sets up Brentwood Town’s Essex Cup confrontation nicely.  Been a good day for our sides elsewhere too.  Much better than Christmas shopping this.

Until the next time, enjoy the weekend, and your football.

—————

Injury Time:  I think the hosts are safe.  Just.  Though Soham are throwing the frozen kitchen sink at them.

85th min – GOAL! ….. Brentwood Town 6,  SOHAM TOWN RANGERS 3  A scramble inside the six yard box after a Jonathan Miles fumble, and ROBBIE MASON completes the second hat-trick of the afternoon.

[audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/12-Brentwood-6-3-Soham.mp3|titles=12 – Brentwood 6-3 Soham]

What a game!

80th min – GOAL! ….. BRENTWOOD TOWN 6,  Soham Town Rangers 2  A break, a trip, a free kick, a moan, a consultation with the lino, a penalty, another ALEX READ goal.

[audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/11-Brentwood-6-2-Soham.mp3|titles=11 – Brentwood 6-2 Soham]

It’s just that simple.

78th min – Abs Thompson replaces Steve Butterworth.  His first action, apart from putting his hands down his shorts, is to help the defence out as Soham Town Rangers earn a number of corners.  They are all cleared relatively comfortably though.

75th min – Great early run from Steve Butterworth on the right, finding space from a free kick.  He cuts inside the area and shoots, but it’s comfortably blocked.

73rd min – And Robbie tries to make an immediate impact with a dipping shot from around 30 yards.  Which dips just over the bar of the goals on the training pitch.

69th min – Wood take off Lewis Frost  – a very apt name in these conditions now – and bring on Robbie Rees.

67th min – Even closer.  A free kick comes in from the right touchline, about 30 yards out, and Joe Asensi’s header from six yards misses the crossbar by about a milimetre.

64th min – Perilously close to the visitors closing the gap further.  Great run down the right, a high centre into the area, and Luke Stanley volleys just over from about 10 yards.

57th min – GOAL! ….. Brentwood Town 5,  SOHAM TOWN RANGERS 2  Well, no.  Home defence asleep again, ROBBIE MASON left on his own inside the area, and his low shot reduces the deficit.

[audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/10-Brentwood-5-2-Soham.mp3|titles=10 – Brentwood 5-2 Soham]

Surely not?

54th min – GOAL! ….. BRENTWOOD TOWN 5,  Soham Town Rangers 1  From the goal kick, the ball is played to DARYL ROBSON on the edge of the area.  He learnt his lesson from a minute ago.  Not much power, but low, accurate and in.

[audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/9-Brentwood-5-1-Soham.mp3|titles=9 – Brentwood 5-1 Soham]

Game safe?

53rd min – A Daryl Robson first time shot from just outside the area ends up just outside Shenfield.

50th min – A stinging Luke Stanley shot is excellently pasrried away by Jonathan Miles for a Soham corner, which is easily cleared.  An understandably urgent start to the second half from the visitors.

4.02pm – KICK OFF!  What on earth will happen next?

—————

HALF TIME:  And yet another magical 45 minutes comes to a close.  I do pick ’em.  It looked ominous at the start, grave after 25 minutes, but somehow Brentwood Town have stormed it in the clear blue skies.  What a game.

[audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/8-Brentwood-4-1-Soham-Half-Time.mp3|titles=8 – Brentwood 4-1 Soham – Half Time]

Right, off for a Bovril and a lie-down.  Laters.

45th min – GOAL! ….. BRENTWOOD TOWN 4,  Soham Town Rangers 1  As Alex has the matchball safely in his pocket, he turns provider.  Low pass inside the area, and ABS THOMPSON ‘s shot from about eight yards puts Brentwood in dreamland.

[audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/7-Brentwood-4-1-Soham.mp3|titles=7 – Brentwood 4-1 Soham]

Oh yes!

42nd min – You can tell a game’s a cracker when I spend all my time trying to keep the updating updates up to date – and filing.  So, so much action the past 20 minutes.  The visitors look a bit shell shocked.  No wonder.

38th min – GOAL! ….. BRENTWOOD TOWN 3,  Soham Town Rangers 1  This is getting stupid.  More pass and move down the right, a centre from the byeline and ALEX READ is incredibly on his own inside the six yard box.  He controls and completes his hat trick and still has time to light a cigarette.

[audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/6-Brentwood-3-1-Soham.mp3|titles=6 – Brentwood 3-1 Soham]

Marevllous fun.

32nd min – GOAL! ….. BRENTWOOD TOWN 2,  Soham Town Rangers 1  Blimey.  Great pass and movement down the right, a through ball to ALEX READ, the keeper comes out to narrow the angle, but Alex cleverly shoots over him and into the left hand corner of the corner.

[audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/5-Brentwood-2-1-Soham.mp3|titles=5 – Brentwood 2-1 Soham]

Cracking stuff!

28th min – GOAL! ….. BRENTWOOD TOWN 1,  Soham Town Rangers 1  How about that for a response?  Daryl Robson runs at the defence on the left, a lovely through ball to ALEX READ, and his low shot goes into the right hand corner of the net.

[audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/4-Brentwood-1-1-Soham.mp3|titles=4 – Brentwood 1-1 Soham]

Liquid football!

25th min – GOAL! ….. Brentwood Town 0, SOHAM TOWN RANGERS 1  Brentwood just wouldn’t learn from their earlier mistakes.  Asleep again as a pass from the left found ROBBIE MASON totally unmarked, inside the area on the right.  He made no mistake this time.

[audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/3-Brentwood-0-1-Soham.mp3|titles=3 – Brentwood 0-1 Soham]

Bah

22nd min – It’s cold but the action on the pitch is hot.  Ooooh errr indeed.

[audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/2-Brentwood-v-Soham-Mid-1st-Half.mp3|titles=2 – Brentwood v Soham Mid 1st Half]

A cracker so far.

20th min – Alex Read comes even closer, this time a piledriver from a similar distance on the left, which was turned around the near post superbly.  The subsequent corner is easily cleared.

18th min – Soham custodian Dan Bircham atones for his earlier error with a fine save from a low 20 yard Alex Read shot, from a central right position.  It looked in all the way, but he got a hand to it and was then booted clear.

16th min – Getting very nippy here now.  Thank goodness I managed to buy some jeans this week. George at Asda, fiver, can’t go wrong.  Back in the land of football, lots of shouting and endeavour but no creating or shooting.

12th min – A moment of controversy.  Brentwood thought that had taken the lead.  Steve Butterworth shoots from inside the area after a long ball down the left, the visiting keeper fumbles it, and Daryl Robson bundles home the rebound.  The lino, though, had his flag up before the shot went in, and it’s chalked off.  More incandescence from the home dugout.  I shouldn’t.  But chortle.

7th min – Oops.  The home defence went to sleep, and a cross field pass found Soham’s James McCabe completely unmarked on the right, about 10 yards from the byeline.  His centre’s a good one but Robbie Mason heads over.  Sweary words emanate from the home dugout.

6th min – Why is there a smell of stew?  The hosts are now settling down after the early scare.  Nothing created by either side since then.

2nd min – Already a major let off for ‘Wood.  Jonathan Miles kick from goal goes straight to Soham’s Luke Stanley, unmarked and just 20 yards out.  He redeems himself, however, with a superb parry away from the free shot.  Phew.

3.01pm – Kick Off!  Oh yes!

—————

2.58pm – The teams come out to Plan B and a bit of indifference, Brentwood in their light blue shirts and socks with white shirts, and Soham in green and white stripes, green shorts and socks.  Provided by Primark and George At Asda.

2.55pm – The crowd is on the small side.  Sort of enough space on a park bench size.  But the club staff are friendly and as enthusiastic as ever.  It’s a pity the locals can’t pop down to visit a bit more often.  Much better than trolley bashing and Christmas shopping.

2.50pm – Team News  Brentwood Town go with:

1 – Jonathan Miles

2 – Ryan Doyle (c)

3 – Ted Llewellyn

4 – Connor Witherspoon

5 – Darren Blewitt

6 – Sam West

7 – Steve Butterworth

8 – Daryl Robson

9 – Alex Read

10 – Lewis Frost

11 – Abs Seymour

Subs:

12 – Sam Bantick

14 – Greg Cohen

15 – Martyn Stokes

16 – Robbie Rees

17 – Abs Thompson

Plenty of players who know their stuff there.

2.45pm – In the other games, East Thurrock have drawn their last three league matches, and eight out of 14 in the season.  They need to start winning sooner rather than later.

Something that Billericay Town also need to start doing again today.  Bit of a rollercoaster season so far for the New Lodge side.  A run of wins followed by a run of defeats.  It’d be nice to just win consistently.  But how boring would that be?

Tough away trips for our League Two sides, but they’re both in such decent form they should hold no fears.  I once went past a launderette with internet access in Bristol, you know.  I guess all the dirty websites you got onto in there were soon washed away.

2.40pm – As you may have realised, I have a bit of a track record for dramatic late equalisers and goals the past couple of months.  In the last eight games, seven have featured last minute or injury time equalisers.  12 goals have been scored in the last five minutes in those games too.

The other game of those eight was comparatively boring.  Just a team coming back from 2-0 down to draw level in the last quarter of an hour.  Pah.

If Brentwood are a goal up after 85 minutes, I’m going home, and win the three points for them.  If they’re getting beat, I’ll just wave to the away team’s dug-out, letting them know the fate that awaits them.  Chortle.

2.35pm – Good afternoon from a very chilly Arena for this afternoon’s Ryman One North clash.  And, after all these postponements in recent weeks, we’re due a good ‘un.

This shows promise too.  Looks can be deceptive you know.  Brentwood Town seem as if they’re having a bit of a languish, down in 17th.  Due to cup commitments and postponements, however, they have plenty of scope for climbing up the table.

Their opponents were understandably the pre-season favourites after a lot of summer investment and a few names being brought in.  Soham Town Rangers have  only just recovered, though, from a disastrous start, and are still four points adrift off the play-off zone.

It could get worse though for them too.  Brentwood may be eight points behind their visitors, but have a massive six games in hand.  As unlikely as it seems, this could be the springboard of a promotion bid for the hosts if things go their way.  This match may well be an early Christmas cracker.

Brentwood Town v Soham Town Rangers – LIVE

Billericay Town 2-0  Bath City

Harrow Borough  2-3  East Thurrock United

Bristol Rovers  0-1  Dagenham & Redbridge

Fleetwood Town  0-0  Southend United

—————
