Potters Bar Town v East Thurrock United – LIVE

Potters Bar Town  3-4  East Thurrock United

Canvey Island  1-1  Brentwood Town

——————————

FULL TIME:  At times it was like a full blooded league fixture, with plenty of swears at the ref, which by definition made it fun.  The Rocks had a decent run-out, played some good stuff at times, and John Coventry will be fully aware which of his players still have some work to do before next week’s opener.

Elsewhere, a very good result for Brentwood Town, drawing away at Canvey, and only then denied at the death.  Things are looking good at the Arena.

Right, time for home.  Next up is Billericay v Leiston on Saturday.  Until then, enjoy the summer, and the golds.

—————

83rd min – East Thurrock are now in full control of the situation, coming forward without creating anything dangerous.  Yes, I’m trying to tempt fate, and a home goal, to make it fun.

77th min – GOAL! ….. Potters Bar Town 2,  EAST THURROCK UNITED 4 Huzzah and hurrah!  Another through ball and a firm shot from just inside the area appears to have made the game safe.  Perhaps.

73rd min – Now it’s gone back to football and end-to-end stuff.  Some nice passing from Potters Bar ends in a desperately defended scramble.  Then the Rocks go downfield and create similar mayhem from a couple of corner.  Liquid football.

A field, a ball, a bulb or two, and 22 idiots.

70th min – Just been a lot of shouts and argiung.  The Rocks players are fuming at a penalty not given.  So what?  It’s just a friendly, guys, you have to deal with decisions going against you during the season, why get het up now?

66th min – GOAL! ….. POTTERS BAR TOWN 3,  East Thurrock United 3 Hey, now hang on!  The ref has over-ruled the linesman and given the goal.   Imagine if that had happened in ’66, the lino being over-ruled?  The fact it was a perfectly good goal is immaterial.

65th min – Controversy as the home side believe they’ve got an equaliser after a shot from a tight angle inside the area.  The linesman has his flag up, though, and it’s chalked off, much to the dismay of the hosts.  Chortle.

60th min – GOAL! ….. Potters Bar Town 2,  EAST THURROCK UNITED 3 What is it about me watching second half comebacks from the dead.  A through ball, and SAM HIGGINS lobs the keeper.  They’ll be dancing in the street of Rookery Hill at that one.

58th min – GOAL! ….. Potters Bar Town 2,  EAST THURROCK UNITED 2 Eat my goal!  KRIS NEWBY gets the ball on the right hand edge of the area, turns inside and shoots home.

Vid Clip: Rocks Reduce Arrears

54th min – GOAL! ….. Potters Bar 2,  EAST THURROCK UNITED 1 Back in it.  An obvious foul, and a penalty into the roof of the net.  That’s how to take them, England and GB.  Striker!

52nd min – The Rocks assume their attacking, to no avail as yet.  One refereeing decision, for a foul on the Potters goalie, ends in a pottymouth shout of frustration.

8.46pm – Kick Off! Blimey, they’re back early.

—————

HALF TIME: Apologies for the brief loss of service.  You missed a couple of Rocks efforts, Kye Ruel trying to dribble around the keeper but being crowded out, and a volley hitting the crossbar but going over.  When your luck’s out, so are you results generally.

View from the press box. Smears included free of charge.

Never mind, it was overall a good first half performance.  One defensive error and one pitch bobble are the only negatives.  And still 45 electrifying minutes to go.

Right, off for a Bovril and a brolly.  Laters.

—————

37th min – GOAL! ….. POTTERS BAR TOWN 2,  East Thurrock United 0 This is silly!  The hosts have had just two shots!  This time, the attempt at goal looks an easy one to save, but the ball hits a divot and over the keeper’s despairing hand.  Ho hum.

36th min – The Rocks respond, and Kris Newby’s clever through ball finds Sam Higgins, whose shot just inside the area is parried for a corner.

33rd min – GOAL! ….. POTTERS BAR TOWN 1,  East Thurrock United 0 We knew it was coming, didn’t we!  A high punt to the edge of the area, keeper and defender hesitate, let the ball bounce, and the hosts number 7 puts it in from around 15 yards.  Blimey.

32nd min – The first real attack of any note from Potters Bar.  A nice, curling shot from about 20 yards goes narrowly past the right hand post.

27th min – And, at last, we have our first moan at the ref.  A midfielder from the hosts says “Reffffffff, which way are you gonna give it?” after a perfectly fair tackle, with everyone else playing on.  Ooh, the rain, it raineth again.

23rd min – Oof, that was close.  From the corner on the left, Newby gets in another shot at goal.  The keeper doesn’t save it, the ball simply rebounds off him without him knowing anything about it.

22nd min – Unofficial attendance is 36.  And whilst I was counting, Kris Newby fired in a stinging shot inside the area that Potters Bar keeper Ed Thomson did well to parry for a corner.

18th min – Same story, East Thurrock United attack, Potters Bar Town defend, with their keeper making a decent save, coming out to thwart a one-on-one on the edge of the area.

The ball magnet is that way, mate.

13th min – Another surging visitors attack (pic coming up) results in another decent point blank save.  With yellow balls, I might add, this evening.

8th min – Nothing clear cut but the Rocks have settled well.  All the regulars are playing such as Kris Newby, Kye Ruel, Reiss Gilbey and Ryan Sammons.  Who needs team sheets when you have such memorable mugshots as those?

3rd min – Almost the perfect start for East Thurrock.  Some nice play from midfield, stroking the ball around well, which results in a cracking shot just inside area on the right which the home keeper does well to parry clear.  Encouraging in the gloom.

7.48pm – KICK OFF! Oh yes!

——————————

7.40pm – A belated welcome to the South Mimms Travel Stadium, home of the one and only Potters Bar Town FC, where East Thurrock United continue their pre-season preparations.

2011/12 was certainly one to remember for the Rocks.  An epic FA Cup run, culminating in their blaze of glory departure in front of the nation’s tv cameras, a League Cup Final appearance, and a record club total in the Premier Division, earning them the Ryman League Team of the Season Award.

That, however, is something John Coventry’s boys want to build on rather than consider it a peak.  Tonight should be a good test of which of his current squad are up to snuff yet.  Potters Bar Town are quick, with a couple of skillful players, and always hard to beat.  An intriguing evening is assured.
