Mila Falls on Sunday Lunch

This week we welcomed back to the Show the fantastic singer songwriter Mila Falls.

Mila popped into the phoenix FM studios to chat live about her brand new single ‘Guilty Pleasure’ and the forth coming video for the track.

‘Guilty Pleasure’ encapsulates the intoxicating throws of lust, love and feeling truly alive. Similarly the track uses an upbeat soul as a vehicle to deliver sonic-cheeriness, but this time with an RnB edge. Transporting you somewhere glorious and giving ‘escapism’ an entirely new meaning, this track delivers smooth tones, sung in a modulated fashion mixed with understated coo.

Mila has had a busy year with tour slots alongside Chase & Status, Jason Derulo, Years & Years, Dizzee Rascall and Jess Glynne. Plus extensive radio play on Radio 1, Kiss FM and of course Phoenix FM in her arsenal, 2016 is shaping up to be the year Mila Falls takes center stage with her most personal and revealing works to date.

Lydia Lucy on Sunday Lunch Show

Straight from her Saturday night performance on BBC`s The Voice UK, I was joined on the show this week by the fabulous Lydia Lucy.

After wowing the judges with her rendition of Iggy Azalea`s ‘Trouble’ on the blind auditions, Lydia took to our TV screens this week in the battle stage of the Voice UK, her performance against fellow #TeamWill mate Irene Alano-Rhodes with the tricky Aerosmith track ‘Crying’was pitch perfect and saw Lydia ease to the next round of the competition.

Having worked with Lydia a few times I can honestly say she is one of the nicest down to earth girls  you can meet, and her work ethic is second to none, Lydia works tirelessly in schools, malls, venues both large and small, and has even sung in a boxing ring, perfecting her already incredible vocals.

We wish her well in the competition, and either way I predict a big future for this fantastically talented young lady.

Dave Santos on Sunday lunch

I was joined on the show this week by talented Americana singer songwriter Dave Santos.

Born and raised in  the sunny Canary Islands, Dave Santos made Americana his genre. He mostly writes about heartache, booze, women, bars and roads. Armed with a guitar and a harmonica, he’s certainly not the depressing folky type of performer.

Together with his band ‘Dave Santos & The Odds n’ Ends’. They play a good crossover of Country/Rock n’ Roll/Bluegrass/Folk/Blues around London, all songs penned by Dave himself.

His debut  EP ‘Heartaches & Whatnot’ was released in January 2015, and is available  on iTunes – Amazon MP3 – Google Play  Spotify – Deezer – Shazam

Dave has played stages in Nashville, Tennessee; performed regularly in London for over two years in Americana/Roots bills; been the supporting act in London for established Country act Brennen Leigh & Noel McKay at the prestigious Green Note; been host of a couple of live music nights in London.

In 2015, he  played his first festival in the UK, ‘Live From The Lawn’ in Tyntesfield (North Sommerset). The same year has seen Dave Santos & The Odds n’ Ends play on well-known London stages such as The Troubadour, The Garage and The Fiddler’s Elbow.

His influences come pretty much from American music, especially that American music that Marty Stuart would call ‘three chords and the truth’. Dave would add ‘…and good times!’

Rebecca Ferguson at The Brentwood Festival

It was fun chatting to Rebecca Ferguson at the Brentwood Festival last weekend, I caught up with Rebecca moments before she appeared on the main stage, I asked her about her new Album “lady Sings the Blues” and she replied; ‘ you can hear some of the tracks in a minute, I’m singing quite a few here at the festival” to which I said I’m sure you will smash it!!, to be honest with my Essex accent and her heavy Liverpool accent, I’m not sure we understood each other LOL, needless to say she certainly smashed it.

After her performance we all headed down to the VIP area to watch Billy Ocean, where she danced the night away with her young children, she certainly seemed to be having a lot of fun.

Rebecca has had a fantastic journey since appearing on Xfactor back in 2011, she was mentored by Cheryl Cole and made it all the way to the finals where she dueted with Christina Aguilera. 2011 also saw her debut album ‘Heaven’ that was also well received by fans.

More recently she has performed with Burt Bacharach, and is now busy touring and promoting her new album ‘Lady sings the Blues’ which is out now on iTunes and Amazon.

You can see some of Rebecca’s performance on the video below, along with a few pics;

Billy Ocean at the BrentWood Festival

Headlining the Saturday Night at this years Brentwood Festival was the legend that is Billy Ocean.

Billy moved to Romford at the age of seven, and regularly sang in London pubs and Clubs in the early 70s, Billy took his stage name Ocean from the Ocean estate in Sepney in london’s East End where he was living at the time.

In 1976 he recorded his first Album ‘Billy Ocean’ with its first single release “Love really hurts without you” a song that charted No2 in the UK charts and a song that he belted out at the Brentwood Festival to the delight of the crowds.

Billy’s greatest success came in 1984 with the release of the album ‘Suddenly’ and its main single ‘Caribbean Queen’, and again in 1986 with the album ‘Love Zone’ with one of his biggest single releases ‘When the Going Gets Tought the Tough Get Going’.

Although we did not do a recorded interview I did get time to chat to Billy back stage and I asked him if he was excited to be at the Brentwood Festival

“I am glad you could all come to the party” he replied, on touring, and festivals he told me ” I am more passionate about music thane ever before, and blessed to be able to share my songs with the world and people of Brentwood”.

Billy’s ability to work the crowd was amazing and he put on one of the best sets of the festival weekend.

Norell & the Dub Factory on Sunday Lunch

With the summer finally making an appearance this weekend, we look set for another red hot Sunday Lunch Show.

My guest in the studio this week was Norell from the band

`Norell and the Dub Factory`.

Originally from Italy Norell has been based in UK for the last 3 years, she  set up home  in London to take advantage of the city`s famous and vibrant  music scene.

Norell who has been very  busy gigging popped into the show to chat about her brand new EP titled `Evidence`and play a selection of tracks from the EP.

They describe their music as an unusual mix of Dub/Reggae tracks with Rock-Pop vocals, and their new EP certainly delivers all of these styles.

Norell & The Dub Factory set up in September 2014 in order to create an original Anglophone project, Niko was able to introduce Norell to Reggae music and she fell in love straight away, and here the story begins.
Niko’s rhythms and nuances are soft and ‘dub’, making every song unique but also commercially viable and easy to listen to. The name of the band gives an insight into Niko’s method of songwriting – relentless, passionate and technically precise.
Both their first single and their EP are available now on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, ReverbNation.com and several other online outlets.

The Gutter Brothers on Sunday Lunch

My first 0ff two guests this week were, Tom,Chris and Tony from the band,  The Gutter Brothers, the band once described as ‘The loudest band in skiffle’ by none other than Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson.

The Gutter Brothers are an English skiffle and rock band ,They formed in early 1985 after singer and washboard player Tony Green arrived in London from his native New Orleans and met Tea Chest Bass player Dennis Johnson performing on the street in Covent Garden with skiffle duo Slap and Tickle. Over the course of the following eighteen months there were several personnel changes but towards the end of 1987 the line up had stabilised with the addition of guitarists Chris Cawte and Steve Turner and drummer Jeff Walker.

The Gutter Brothers have been developing their unique brand of popular music since they formed as a street band in London in 1985. The next decade took them from the cobbles of Covent Garden to Reading festival and live TV performances on MTV Europe (1st LWT’s 1 Exposure, ITV’s Night Network, Jools Holland’s original live music program “The Happening” as well as their video “Fat Cadillac” being declared a HIT! on Juke Box Jury, hosted by Jools Holland.

Soon after their debut release, “Isometric Boogie”, they were asked to produce materials to several TV soundtracks. You can find Gutter Brothers original songs on “Gone to the dogs”, “Gone to Seed”, “Boon” and their take on Lovin Spoonful’s “Summer in the City” is a high point in “Only Fools and Horses” Christmas special “Miami Twice”. All the while slaying live audiences by extensive touring all over UK, Europe and the US

McCrei on Sunday Lunch

I was joined on the show this week by two incredibly talented sisters that front the band McCrei

McCrei was formed in 2012 when two sisters, Leanne and Shannon McCree began sharing their experiences through their song writing and started gigging on the Camden acoustic circuit. Fast forward two years and the sisters have performed at over 250 gigs including the O2 Academy, The Hope, The Cavern, Distillers, Rochester Castle and various other venues throughout England.

In December 2014, Leanne and Shannon were introduced through a friend to a musician trio consisting of Tom O.Mitchell, Charlotte Whiting and Neil Cornwell who have since become McCrei’s band.

Inspired by an introduction into traditional Soul and Funk, the music takes some direction while staying true to their signature style. McCrei’s influences include Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Joss Stone and Aretha Franklin.

In 2014 the record producer Alan Glass, whose credits include Aretha Franklin, Misteeq and The Lighthouse Family, discovered McCrei on Facebook and started co-writing with McCrei. The songs Show Me, Now I’m With You, Shines So Brightly and I’m Missing You were co-written by McCrei and Alan Glass. I’m Missing You is featured on a film called Last Round which is being premiered in London in April and the film is also being submitted to the Cannes Film Festival. McCrei will be performing I’m Missing You live at the film’s London premier in April.

In January 2015 the record label Disco Soul Gold Music (DSG Music) heard ‘Show Me’ being played on a radio station and approached McCrei to discuss releasing their material. ‘Show Me’, the debut single is being released as a double A side in April 2015 through DSG Music.

Singer Ashleigh Ashley on the Show

Another fresh face in the world of music this week, as I was joined on the show by singer songwriter Ashleigh Ashley (so good her mum named her twice)   :)

Ashleigh  best known for her lyrical narratives, complex melodies and distinctive London twang, and is from South East London popped into the phoenix fm studio to talk about her brand new EP and give us an exclusive LIVE session on the show accompanied by her guitarist Matt Hunter.

Her debut EP titled ‘Criminal Angel’  is a 21st century update of classic Big Band sounds. Ashleigh plays an analogue of a Bond Girl role in the title track, and ventures through a variety of genres and textures over the following five original compositions. Euphoric instrumentals, plenty of hooks, intelligent melodies and an understanding of negative space make the record a gripping debut.

Th EP is available to download NOW on iTunes.

SOPHIA AMATO on The Sunday Lunch Show

My first  guest on this weeks show was the incredably talented singer songwriter Sophia Amato

Sophia who is based in South London, brought a refreshing mix of electronic soul and R&B to the phoenix fm studio and highlighted her songs for us on the show live.

Growing up listening to Lauryn Hill and Destiny’s Child Sophia is heavily inspired by lyrics and harmonies, combining this with her current playlist of James Blake, Jay Electronica and Sasha Keable the result is massive. Sophia is a pioneering female in the use of vocal looping as one of the first singers to layer up live using the Boss RC505 making an extremely cool sound.

She said;

“I love harmonies and using a loop pedal allows me to create beautiful, interesting chords without accompanying myself in the conventional way”

2014 has been a great year so far for Sophia kicking off with a duet with Laura Mvula featuring as a part of the Mastercard Idents for the Brit Awards.

Writing is in full flow now for the upcoming EP launch, and gigs and sessions are packed into her diary, so thanks again for taking some time out to pop on to the Sunday Lunch Show.

Through the next two years the band then toured the album throughout the UK playing support slots for the likes of Mr Hudson, Man Like Me, Emilia Mitiku, The Blueberries, SPACE, The Cuban Brothers and culminating in 2013 with a stage headline at Brownstock on the bill with bands such as  Professor Green and Tom Odell.

In 2013 the band left Tin Robot Records having bought back the rights to their first album ‘What’s Your Tonic?’. Now independent they brought in producer Charles Rees (Paul Weller, Miles Kane) on two new tracks. The first one of which ‘What You’re Made Of’ which was released in January 2014.

REGGAE BAND `DoJo` on The SUNDAY LUNCH SHOW

My second guest on this weeks extended show was Reggae band DoJo

Dojo are a collective of jazz and reggae musicians from South Africa and the UK whose starkly political 21st century outlook and uncanny talent for melody and harmony are taking reggae from the underground to the mainstream for the first time in a generation.

Conner and Alex who play the bass and drums in the band popped into the phoenix fm studio to chat about the bands new 5 track EP `Descry`

Dojo’s music is a celebration of the rich heritage of African, English, and American music. Lyrical content featuring up-to-the-minute political and philosophical observations comes from a combined Christian, Buddhist, and Atheist viewpoint. Explorations of joy, despair, and human nature are underpinned by an overriding theme of harmony and spiritual connection between all living things.

Dojo’s live shows, which showcase the band’s heightened sense of showmanship and their remarkable musicianship, have received widespread critical acclaim. Within weeks of forming Dojo were booked to support such luminaries as Groundation and Seun Kuti & Egypt 80.

LIVE `RUDE AUDIO` on SUNDAY LUNCH

My Second Guests on this weeks show was the Extremely talented Rude Audio

Rude Audio who are  from South London popped into the Phoenix FM studio to chat about the band music and play an exclusive acoustic set from their hugely popular Ruder EP.

The Band are, well!! think, Dub, Dubstep, Electronica, Balearic and you are almost there.

The best way to describe them is, in their own words from FaceBook;

Rude Audio were forged in the fires of Hell in the wake of a 7 week ayahuasca binge that started and finished in the gutters of south London. Clambering out of the appalling post-drug melee, haunted and battle scarred individuals swore that they couldn’t articulate the horror they had borne witness to and the only thing that would lend them a vocabulary to describe the mind-boggling vistas they had been traversing was furious, angry noise. And so Rude Audio were born

A concise history of Local Radio by Scott Ross

This week Scott Ross was Invited to the Upminster Rotary Club to give a after dinner talk on the history of local radio, it was held at Upminster Golf Club, where Scott, who was the guest speaker and Myself whom merely  run the projection av side along with a  powerpoint presentation entertained the 25 strong audience for the evening.  Below you can find the Concise history of local radio speech with some of the pictures and sound clips used in the talk. please feel free to post any questions on at the bottom of the page.

AS IS WELL KNOWN THIS YEAR SEES THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE START OF THE FIRST

WORLD WAR. WHY DO I MENTION THAT? WELL REALLY TO HIGHLIGHT JUST HOW MUCH HAS

CHANGED  DURING THE PAST CENTURY.

IN 1900 BUSES WERE STILL DRAWN BY HORSES AND YET THE SAME CENTURY

HAS SEEN MEN WALK ON THE MOON.

WITHOUT DOUBT ONE OF THE MOST MOMENTOUS CHANGES HAS BEEN IN THE

FIELD OF COMMUNICATIONS.

IN 1900 THE VERY IDEA THAT PEOPLE THEN LIVING WOULD BE ABLE TO HEAR

SPEECH AND MUSIC FROM ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD IN THEIR OWN LIVING ROOMS

WITH NO TANGIBLE LINK WAS NOT EVEN PRESENT IN THE MINDS OF THE

SCIENTISTS OF THE DAY, LET ALONE THE GENERAL PUBLIC. NOBODY THEN LIVING

HAD ANY REASON TO THINK THAT THEY WERE SOON TO WITNESS THE BIRTH OF A

NEW COMMUNICATION MEDIUM THAT WITHIN JUST A FEW YEARS WOULD COVER

THE GLOBE TO BECOME MORE POWERFUL, EXERTING MORE PRESSURE ON PUBLIC

OPINION THAN PULPIT, PLATFORM, THEATRE AND THE PRINTED WORD COMBINED.

PERHAPS EVEN MORE ASTONISHING IS THE FACT THAT AT THE END OF THE FIRST

WORLD WAR BROADCASTING DID NOT EXIST, BUT BY THE BEGINNING OF THE

SECOND IT HAD SPANNED THE WORLD!

IN FACT RADIO BROADCASTING ACTUALLY STARTED RIGHT HERE IN ESSEX AND WHILST

MOST PEOPLE WOULD CONSIDER THAT SO FAR AS BRITAIN IS CONCERNED

COMMERCIAL RADIO DID NOT ARRIVE UNTIL 1973. THIS IS ONLY PARTLY TRUE.

marconi

Marconi Transmitter Chelmsford

Chelmsford 5xx transmitter

THE VERY FIRST STATIONS WERE NOT BBC OPERATED.

AS EARLY AS JUNE 1920 THE DAILY MAIL HAD SPONSORED A BROADCAST FROM

CHELMSFORD. THAT STATION WAS, HOWEVER FORCED TO CLOSE LATER THAT

YEAR, ON THE GROUNDS THAT BROADCASTING ENTERTAINMENT WAS LIKELY TO INTERFERE

WITH STATIONS DOING “REAL WORK”.

IT’S SUCCESSOR WHICH OPENED AT WRITTLE IN FEBRUARY 1922 WAS AUTHORISED TO

BROADCAST FOR JUST 15 MINUTES A WEEK!

Writtle Radio Station

2 MT Writtle

LATER THAT SAME YEAR THE BBC WAS FORMED AS THE BRITISH BROADCASTING COMPANY

LIMITED BY 6 BIG FIRMS: BRITISH THOMSON HOUSTON, GENERAL ELECTRIC, MARCONI,

METROPOLITAN VICKERS, RADIO COMMUNICATION AND WESTERN ELECTRIC, EACH OF WHICH

PUT UP £10,000. ANOTHER £40,000 WAS AVAILABLE IN £1 SHARES FOR OTHER MANUFACTURERS.

EVENTUALLY THE COMPANY HAD 1700 SHAREHOLDERS.  THE COMPANY HAD BEEN FORMED BY

THE VARIOUS MANUFACTURERS OF RADIO RECEIVERS AT THE BEHEST OF  THE POST OFFICE,

NOT BECAUSE THERE WAS ANY POLITICAL REQUIREMENT FOR A MONOPOLY  BUT BECAUSE THE

POST OFFICE DID NOT WANT THE ADMINISTRATION INVOLVED IN DECIDING  AMONGST THE

VARIOUS APPLICANTS FOR LICENCES WHO HAD COME FORWARD. THE LONDON  STATION – 2LO

WAS RUN BY THE MARCONI COMPANY, THE BIRMINGHAM STATION 5IT BY  INTERNATIONAL

WESTERN ELECTRIC AND THE MANCHESTER STATION 2ZY BY METROPOLITAN  VICKERS. THE

STATIONS WERE EACH POWERED AT ABOUT 1500 WATTS. BY THE END OF 1926 AT

LEAST 70% OF THE POPULATION WAS WITHIN RANGE OF A LOCAL STATION

radio map 1

WHAT IS PERHAPS LESS WELL KNOWN IS THAT TECHNICALLY SPEAKING AT LEAST, THE BBC

STARTED LIFE AS A “PIRATE”. THE FIRST BROADCASTS WERE MADE IN NOVEMBER FROM THE

LONDON STATION “2LO” AT MARCONI HOUSE, BUT THE LICENCE, ALBEIT BACKDATED,

WAS NOT ISSUED UNTIL JANUARY 18TH 1923.

2LO at Marconi House

2LO at Marconi House

BY 1926 THE IDEA OF MONOPOLY BROADCASTING HAD, HOWEVER, BECOME ENTRENCHED, AND

THE ORIGINAL PRIVATE COMPANY BECAME THE CORPORATION, IT REMAINS TODAY.

THE BBC STATIONS WERE SUCCESSFUL, IN PART BECAUSE THEY WERE “LOCAL”.

THE TECHNOLOGY TO NETWORK NATIONALLY HAD YET TO BE INVENTED. ONCE RADIO BECAME

NATIONAL, AUDIENCES STARTED TO STRAY ESPECIALLY TOWARDS THE MORE LIVELY

ENTERTAINMENT EMANATING FROM COMMERCIAL COMPETITORS ON THE CONTINENT.

IN SPITE OF ENORMOUS OPPOSITION FROM THE BBC THEMSELVES, THE GOVERNMENT AND THE

POST OFFICE THIS COMPETITION GREW, ESPECIALLY DURING THE 1930’S.

plugge

THE MAN BEHIND THIS WAS A CERTAIN CAPTAIN LEONARD PLUGGE  (pictured above) WHO MIGHT HAVE GIVEN HIS

NAME TO COMMERCIALS, WHICH ARE OFTEN REFERRED TO AS “PLUGS” HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR

THE FACT THAT HIS NAME WAS ACTUALLY PRONOUNCED AS PLUUGE.

HE HAD ORIGINALLY PERSUADED SELFRIDGES TO SPONSOR A  FASHION SHOW FROM PARIS IN

1925, ALTHOUGH ONLY 4 PEOPLE ARE RECORDED AS HAVING HEARD THE BROADCAST!

EARLY IN THE 1930’S HE FOUNDED THE INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING COMPANY WHO

OPERATED FROM MANY STATIONS ON THE CONTINENT, THE MOST FAMOUS OF WHICH WERE

UNDOUBTEDLY RADIO NORMANDY AND, FOR A SHORT TIME, RADIO LUXEMBOURG BEFORE

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THAT STATION PASSED TO  WIRELESS PUBLICITY LTD, WHO WERE LINKED

WITH CABLE & WIRELESS.

JUST HOW EFFECTIVE COMMERCIAL RADIO WAS THEN, IS EVIDENCED BY THE FACT

THAT EVEN TODAY MOST PEOPLE HAVE HEARD OF THE OVALTINEYS EVEN THOUGH THE

PROGRAMME HAS NOT BEEN ON AIR SINCE 1939 – THAT’S 75 YEARS!

FOR THE FIRST TIME IT BECAME ECONOMIC FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES TO BUY AIRTIME.

UNFORTUNATELY THAT ERA WAS TO BE SHORT LIVED. IT DID, HOWEVER, SERVE TO

RE-IGNITE THE ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST THE INTRODUCTION OF LOCAL RADIO IN THE UK.

APART FROM THE SOLE PRIVATE STATION ON THE ISLE OF MAN – MANX RADIO, IT WAS AGAIN TO

THE BBC THAT GOVERNMENT LOOKED. BUT TIMES HAD CHANGED AND THE NEW BBC LOCAL

STATIONS DID NOT ENJOY THE SUCCESS OF THEIR FORERUNNERS IN THE 1920’S.

PARTLY THIS WAS DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY WERE FM ONLY AND MOST PEOPLE STILL RELIED

ON GOOD OLD AM BUT THE LOCAL OUTPUT WAS RESTRICTED TO ONLY ABOUT 6 HOURS A DAY

AND MUCH OF THIS WAS AIMED AT MINORITY INTERESTS!

Manx Radio

a picture of the PMG, Edward Short and other dignitaries at the opening of the first BBC local radio station – BBC RADIO LEICESTER in November 1967

AND SO A NEW KIND OF LOCAL RADIO WAS INTRODUCED. THE ORIGINAL ILR STATIONS HAD

NO NETWORK FROM WHICH TO DRAW PROGRAMMES AND SO THEIR OUTPUTS WERE 100%

LOCAL.

Local Radio in 1992

Local Radio in 1992

WITH NO CONTROL FROM THE CENTRE THEY COULD TAILOR THEIR PROGRAMMING TO SUIT THE

LOCALITY SERVED. EACH STATION THEREFORE HAD ITS OWN DISTINCTIVE FEEL AND MORE

IMPORTANTLY, SOUND.

THEY RE-INTRODUCED THE “FUN” ELEMENT WHICH HAD CHARACTERISED THE OFFSHORE

STATIONS BUT MORE THAN THAT, THEY LINKED WITH THE COMMUNITIES

THEY WERE TRYING TO SERVE.

FROM THE LAUNCH OF THE INITIAL 19 ILR STATIONS BETWEEN 1973 AND 1976, THE NUMBER OF

STATIONS HAS DRAMATICALLY RISEN TO THE CURRENT FIGURE OF OVER  275, IN THEORY,

GIVING BOTH THE LISTENER AND ADVERTISER THE WIDEST CHOICE THEY HAVE EVER KNOWN.

ilr

A clip from the first ever capital radio broadcast

REGRETTABLY, BUT PERHAPS PREDICTABLY WHAT WERE ORIGINALLY INDEPENDENT

STATIONS OWNED AND OPERATED BY PEOPLE LIVING IN THE AREA BEING SERVED, BECAME

SWALLOWED UP AS RADIO GROUPS BEGAN TO FORM. SUDDENLY THEY HAD THE ABILITY TO

NETWORK A COMMON PROGRAMME, INTRODUCE A COMMOM PLAYLIST AND EVEN HAVE A

COMMON LOGO WITHOUT EVEN THE PRETENCE OF INDIVIDUAL IDENTITY.

THE LESSON THAT PEOPLE ARE LOYAL TO THEIR LOCAL STATION, BECAUSE IT IS LOCAL SEEMS

TO HAVE BEEN LOST ON SOME OF THOSE RUNNING STATIONS TODAY.

A VIEW WAS TAKEN BY ONE GROUP, THAT IF THEY COULD NETWORK THEIR AM GOLD

SERVICE, THEY COULD AFFORD TO EMPLOY BIG NAME PRESENTERS AND THAT

THIS WOULD INCREASE AUDIENCES. IN FACT AUDIENCES FELL AND CONTINUED TO FALL.

NOW AUDIENCES ARE FALLING ON  SOME FM SERVICES, SO WHAT DID THEY DECIDE TO DO? YOU

GUESSED IT, NETWORK AND EMPLOY BIG NAMES!

WITH DIGITAL RADIO NOW CATERING FOR EVERY CONCEIVABLE TASTE, THE FACT THAT

LISTENERS WILL ALWAYS BE LOYAL TO A STATION THEY CONSIDER TO BE THEIR OWN, SEEMS TO

HAVE BEEN LOST ON MANY IN THE INDUSTRY, WHO NOW SEEM DRIVEN BY THEIR ACCOUNTANTS,

RATHER THAN THE PASSION FOR THE MEDIUM WHICH WAS PRESUMABLY WHY THEY CAME INTO

IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!

WHAT A TRAGEDY!

Radio map 2

MERCIFULLY WE NOW HAVE A NEW TIER – OF COMMUNITY RADIO STATIONS LIKE

PHOENIX FM – WHICH ONCE AGAIN STRIVE TO RESTORE FULL SCALE LOCALLY PRODUCED

PROGRAMMING WHILST SERVING A COHERENT LOCAL COMMUNITY.

STATIONS LIKE PHOENIX FM AIM TO PRODUCE PROGRAMMES RELEVANT TO

THE AUDIENCES THEY SEEK TO SERVE.

ONCE AGAIN COMMERCIAL AIRTIME IS WITHIN THE REACH OF EVEN THE SMALLEST LOCAL

BUSINESS. SECONDLY PHOENIX FM AIMS TO BE NOT JUST LOCAL, BUT ALSO BOTH  FUN AND

UNPREDICTABLE

THESE DAYS VIRTUALLY EVERY STATION SOUNDS THE SAME. NOT SO PHOENIX FM!

PLAYLISTS REFLECT THE TASTES OF OUR AUDIENCES AND ARE NOT DREAMT UP IN

SOME REMOTE PART OF THE COUNTRY, OR LONDON, BY INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE NO CONCEPT

OF WHAT PEOPLE IN OUR AREA WANT.

IN CONCLUSION LET ME JUST MAKE MENTION OF THE FACT THAT EVEN THE ORIGINAL ILR

SERVICES WERE OFTEN FORCED TO TRY TO COVER TOO WIDE AN AREA.

WHAT DO THE INHABITANTS OF TWITTY FEE HAVE IN COMMON WITH THOSE

LIVING IN  DAGENHAM  OR ILFORD? VERY LITTLE, I WOULD BEG TO SUGGEST AND SO BY

COVERING A TIGHT GEOGRAPHICAL AREA WE ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE A TRULY UNIQUE SOUNDING

STATION TAILOR MADE TO THE COVERAGE AREA  AND THOSE LIVING WITHIN IT, SUCH THAT

LISTENERS CAN AND DO REGARD IT AS THEIR VERY OWN.

The Voice Contestant Luciee-Marie Closier singing live on Sunday Lunch

This week I welcomed on to the show the talented young singer Luciee Marie Closier.

Luciee, who is from Loughton, took time out from her busy schedule to pop into the Phoenix FM studio to chat about her recent appearance on BBC1’s The Voice and sing live in the studio.

Luciee Marie Closier is a name which is about to take the charts by storm as the future looks very bright for this talented young star

17 year old Luciee came to fame when she appeared in the BBC’s The Voice UK where she was chosen to become a part of Kaiser Chiefs front man Ricky Wilson’s Team, after her rendition of Pixie Lott’s “Mama Do”.

Luciee went on to get through to the battles rounds but was sent home at that point against a fellow contestant, although it was the end of this competition I am certain that this is just the start of a great and exciting  musical journey for Luciee.

In March 2014 Luciee was signed into a Management & PR Contract with global PR firm Lavish PR.  She is going to be working alongside the team at Lavish in addition to teams of songwriters and producers to write, record & release a debut single & album, followed by a UK Tour.

SAFFRON SILVA LIVE ON SUNDAY LUNCH

This week I was delighted to welcome on to the show Saffron Silva.

Saffron  a talented singer songwriter from Surrey, took time out from her busy schedule to join me in the Phoenix fm studio to chat about her music, her likes, and her future, and we even managed to tempt her to sing live on the show.

Saffron who is still at school and only 16 years of age, has a fantastic range of vocals that truly exceed her years, she has great tone and depth to her voice that you could simply listen to all day.

She is presently busy writing her own material, and finding her niche in the music industry, and I am looking forward to welcoming her back in the studio for an update in the not so distant future.

KIRSTI ROBINSON ON SUNDAY LUNCH

The sun made a welcome spring appearance last week to brighten up the town! as did this weeks guest, as I was joined on the show by the talented singer songwriter Kirsti Robinson.

Kirsti whom is based in Kent, took time out from her busy schedule to pop into the phoenix studio to chat about her latest music and play an exclusive live set on the show.

Kirsti’s main aim is to create something different, by taking influences from her favorite artists and merging those with her love for soul and hip hop music ( we called it POP ROCK). Kirsti and her producer/guitarist Adam Ferguson have crafted a sound so fresh and enticing that each track leaves you wanting more.

TEAM RECOVERY ON SUNDAY LUNCH

This week I welcomed on to the show the fantastic urban pop boy band `Team Recovery`

The Band who consist of Tom Lambert, Lloyd Chaplin, Kieran Diver, Stuart Rowe are based in Witham with the exception of Stewart who is from Gravesend.

Team Recovery formed as a group back in June 2012 after becoming a solid group of friends, they started to work on music as a group rather then solo act’s and with a brilliant reaction from the the people who took their time to listen to their music they decided that they would indeed move on to become one of the quickest up & coming groups Essex has to offer

Goldi on the Sunday Lunch Show

On Today`s show it was a pleasure to welcome into the phoenix fm studio the wonderfully talented young singer songwriter `Goldi`

Goldi a local Essex girl, grew up listening to Motown and soul music whilst spending most of her young childhood days playing at the back of her mum and dads restaurant. She is highly influenced by that era and holds those sounds close to her heart.

“whenever I hear that old skool beat it makes me feel excited and happy”

She began her career when she auditioned for a musical theatre show of the premier version of ‘high school musical’,where she scored the part as a cheerleader, which at that point in her life she describes as the best thing she had ever done.

Goldi went on to do more musical theatre shows such as ‘Copacabana’ and ‘Hair’, being on the stage was a huge thing and is something Goldi has always wanted to do since she was a little girl.

She is also a songwriter and takes pride in being creative and writing in the moment,

When she moved on from musical theatre, she began auditioning for girl bands and solo projects around London, with success, Goldi chose to begin an artist development deal with an independent record label, where she recorded for the first time. This experience opened her eyes to what she could achieve and what the world had to offer. After her contract ended, she auditioned for other projects, girl-bands etc but was scouted by a music manager which saw her work along side artists such as so solid crew and producers in and around London.
It came to a point when Goldi realised she wasn’t getting enough, always craving more, her desire to succeed drove her to cut all ties and go it alone no management no deals. She met a music production team ‘Knightstarr’ based in Shoreditch, London, through a mutual friend and since then she has been working with them religiously.

Dani Clay gives Sunday Lunch an exclusive play of her new tracks

Another extended show this week (2nd Feb) as we welcomed back to the show local singer songwriter Dani Clay.

The interview was particularly fun as we had a lot more time on our hands than usual, so it was more of a hour long chinwag  that saw Dani give us some exclusive air play of her latest tracks.

Dani whom recently was nominated for the MTV Unsigned competition, told of her busy 2013, and what we can expect to see from her this year.

Dani`s music has taken a bit of a revamp of late, that has seen some of her traditional blues/motown sounds being replaced with dance, and Drum & Bass,  she has been  recently collaborating with young music Kid Nytz and they have created the song “what I need’ in  a drum n bass genre.

Dani also chatted to me about being contacted by the unsigned production duo 2 weeks ago called Mandal and Forbes who specialise in deep house! her recent email to write with Michael Gray the producer and DJ for the hit Dance anthem song `Weekend`(I can’t wait, for the weekend to begin) and on releasing her own Ep for the summer.

Spencer Hawken on the Sunday Lunch Show

Hi Listeners

Film Director/Producer and Writer Spencer Hawken was my  guest in the studio for this weeks Sunday Lunch Show (12th Jan) along with Actor Jon Guerriero .

Spencer has a number of film projects on the go, including his newly completed horror Zombie film `Death Walks`.

Death Walks… is a psychological horror movie in which zombies invade an East London shopping center (Romford). Filming began in July 2013, and is now complete, with the film now awaiting entry into this years various film festivals.

The film is shot entirely on location in Romford. Mainly at a shopping mall which is the basis for the main part of the film

Death Walks kinda made history in its own little way. Shot for nothing, free, zilch, having used the kindness of everyone involved to make the first true zero budget movie,  and filmed over a very short period of time.

Cast members include Francesca Ciardi (Cannibal Holocaust), Lucinda Rhodes (fall of the Essex Boys), and Jessie Williams (BBC’s Tracy Beaker and The Dumping Ground), and Jon Guerriero who joined us in the studio to give us an actors perspective of the film.

Spencer`s new film is titled ` No Reasons`

No Reasons, is a stark, disturbing drama about a missing child and her terrible secret, from both Spencer and  Lucinda Rhodes, and filming for this is due to start this year, also in the pipeline is` Godfathers of London`

Welcome to the last show page blog of the year, and what a year it has been for guests on the show, the station itself had over 200+ live sessions.

For the last show (Sunday 29th Dec) we re-caped some of my favourites artist`s and bands from the last 12 months

 Mannequins

Sunday Lunch show regulars the Mannequins were my first guest`s of the year and kicked of the show by bringing me a copy of their new album that was out on the 18th January.

Kit Rice

In February I was joined in the studio by the extremely talented Kit Rice along with Joe Acres on acoustic guitar.

Though starting his musical journey as a classical violinist, Kit soon discovered his passion and talent for singing and song writing.

In 2010, he graduated from the BRIT School after four years. Kit immediately embarked on a string of UK and European tours playing the violin with Brentwood folk-pop songstress Leddra Chapman, and has supported acts such as Tom Jones, Ed Sheeran and Toploader.

James Robb

In March My guest was another young singer song writer James Robb  Fresh from his appearance and live set at the Phoenix FM in the foyer gig on the Saturday 9th,

James who is still only 20 years of age was currently working on his debut album and played one of his tracks live in the studio..This is `We All Try`

Distrct 3

A busy April weekend in the studio (Sunday the 17th)  as the Brentwood Centre played host to the Essex indoor festival, whilst presenting the first hour and  awaiting the arrival of my guest HAVVA, I was joined by a surprise visit from xfactor boy band district3

The boys joined me in the studio for a quick chat before they went onto the main stage, and it was also Dan`s Birthday.

District3 had announced plans to embark on a headline tour of the UK later in the week.
The boy band played four dates across the country following their current stint on the X Factor finalists’ arena tour. The new single followed shortly after.

Havva

My second guest in the studio that week was the talented singer songwriter HAVVA.

Havva is a sensational new urban artist hoping to be the next big hitting female in the UK.

Her dynamic, soulful voice enables a variety of audiences to appreciate and enjoy her vocal ability, reminiscent of the classic soul legends combined with the newest RnB sounds. She has the capability of using clever word play techniques to display no boundaries of expression within her songs. Her lyrics portray an affluent understanding of deep emotions, which captivates her audience.

Along with being extremely talented with fantastic vocal`s Havva was also gorgeous and funny,  to tracks from her on the blog, first track `Bittersweet`  and also `Settle Down`

That same day the choir Funky Voices popped into the show and preformed live, yes all 60 of them in the studio, I think it is a phoenix record certainly a show record.

Calico

The Band is from Basildon and describes their music, as well, Rock, Alternative, Punk, Ska,

The Mannequins also popped back on the show in April I said they were regular

Ellamore

I need a break from all the male singers on the show so for the first weekend`s show (Sunday 2nd June), I welcomed to phoenix FM’s studio 1, three beautiful young ladies and talented singer songwriters that are the girl band `Ellamore`

They described their music as Vintage pop with 60`s retro Motown influences,  and build upon success stories from artists such as Bruno Mars, they currently  have an EP out that is entitled` Ellamore Sings` that has 3 fabulous tracks, and are hoping to release a debut album shortly

As always on the show we had a fun light hearted chat on the bands musical journey before settling down to some fantastic track plays from their EP, and were also treated to 2 very special acapella covers. So first up is `Don’t Let Go`

With two albums out on iTunes, her own clothing line on ASOS and 3 UK tours behind her, playing over 100 UK venues including legendary venues such as the 100 Club on Oxford Street and the Hard Rock Café London, Tiger Lilly is one of the most exciting independent artists in the UK right now.

She is a quirky British pop/rock artist from the suburbs of London with Persian roots has a unique voice and distinctive sound and had just released a free downloadable EP titled ‘Revolving Doors’ of which. Here are 2 tracks… `Walk a Mile`

Elane Blane

Sunday 23rd June  I was joined in studio 1 by up-coming singer Ellen Blane
Ellen is an amazing talented 15-year-old singer/songwriter.

Ellen Blane is a very skilled songwriter and has the ability to take real life situations and put it in to lyrics in a song. Ellen also writes all her own material and has also helped write for other artists, and at such a young age.

Ellen has won mass amounts of competitions and is still going strong.
She has performed at Hackney Empire alongside the likes of C Cane and Jermaine Jackman. She has also been put through to perform at a showcase in Camden teen stars.

She is working on all her own material and had got gigs around London when she took a detour to pop onto the show, she has been getting a lot of recognition by different PR’s and different A&R’s.

She will be releasing her material later on in the year. Here is one of the tracks she played live on the show called  `Sunset`

Mr Arch

A sunny 21st July and I was joined on the show by upcoming hip hop star Mr Arch.

You may well remember the name! that is because he rapped on another of the show`s guests track `Catch me if you Can` by R&B s singer Rajiv another show regular who was on the show back in 2012. This was his debut single called…….Run Boy Run

Jonny Winston

Sunday 28th July I was joined in the studio by the wonderfully talented singer songwriter Jonny Winston.
Jonny only got down to business song writing and performing seriously a year and a half ago! And instantly started making heads turn. With new forms of electronic music on the rise and more and more producers looking for unique voices and topline writing talent all it took was one song to open the floodgates. What started out as “good times” with mates eventually led to additional collaborations, compilations and a publishing deal with Phoenix Music International (no relation lol).

Now based in London, and having since popped back to the show quite recently ,  Jonny found time to pop into the show and showcase his new sounds, this Live track is called `Flatline`

Melody and the Boytoys

August brought not only the sunshine on what was a long summer for a change but also some fun in to the studio as I was joined on the show by Melody & Bonnie Freechyld whom had collaborated with the band Boytoys for their new track.

Melody described on twitter as

Bombastic obsessed with food and write songs for pop tarts..

Is a singer, songwriter and promoter who has supported Mich Winehouse and D-Ream (you’re the best thing)

Whilst Bonnie Freechyld who has also worked with Mich Winehouse and Omar, and has over half a million YouTube hits from a connection with the maylay language! Also has a separate pop career.

Here is there track `I like Men`

Tara Prya

(Sunday 13th Oct) it was my pleasure to welcome to the Phoenix fm studio and Sunday Lunch Show singer songwriter `Tara Priya’

Tara who is originates from San Francisco in the USA was over in the UK to write and record her new album, and release it with a major record label.

Tara Priya combines vintage soul, poetic lyrics, and a dash of pop to provide relief from today’s Auto-Tune avalanche. Sweet and sour, lovely and lovelorn, the retro-soul “jewel” (Access!) is a story as distinctive as her sound.

Tara performed several live acoustic tracks on the show here are two of my favourites both live in the studio `Rollin`

Nigel Clarke from the Band `Dodgy` talk about their Charity Christmas track

With Christmas nearly upon us and the race for the Christmas number 1 gathering pace, it was great to catch up with Nigel Clarke from the band Dodgy to talk about the bands new release, `a Christmas song` but with all profits going to the Charity, The Trussel Trust.

The Trussell Trust is a Christian charity working to bring hope and practical help to desperate and marginalised people

Did You Know that This Christmas –

The Trussell Trust predict that 60,000 people in the UK will need to use a food bank, 3 times more than last Christmas.

1 in 3 UK children will be living in poverty.

1 in 5 UK mums will skip meals to feed their children

Its hard to believe that in 2013 in the UK  this is becoming an increasing problem.

The Track is called `Christmas at the Foodbank` and was written by the band to highlight the campaign, the song can be downloaded from iTunes for just 99p

You can find out more about the Song and whats coming up from the band in 2014 on the interview

`Tara Priya` Live

This week (Sunday 13th Oct) it was my pleasure to welcome to the Phoenix fm studio and Sunday Lunch Show singer songwriter `Tara Priya’

Tara who is originates from San Francisco in the USA is over in the UK to write and record her new album,  and release it with a major record label.

She has been described as;

Armed with a voice “you just need to hear” (BBC London) and an irresistible blend of snaps, claps, and golden trumpet peals, Tara Priya combines vintage soul, poetic lyrics, and a dash of pop to provide relief from today’s Auto-Tune avalanche. Sweet and sour, lovely and lovelorn, the retro-soul “jewel” (Access!) is a story as distinctive as her sound.

And I could not agree more!

Her parents, in true Berkeley-hippie fashion, raised her on The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Billie Holiday. The Persian mother and Indian father were delighted when, at four years of age, she began playing piano and writing poetry. Delight turned to dismay when, at nine, she eagerly followed in her brother’s footsteps and became addicted to Tupac, hip-hop, and playing the drums, but don`t let me tell you too much! take a listen to the full interview  with Tara and the exclusive live tracks.

Jonny Winston on the Sunday Lunch show

This week`s guest  (Sunday 28th July) I was joined in the studio by the wonderfully talented singer songwriter Jonny Winston.
Jonny only got down to business songwriting and performing seriously  a year and a half ago! and instantly started making heads turn. With new forms of electronic music on the rise and more and more producers looking for unique voices and topline writing talent all it took was one song to open the floodgates. What started out as “good times” with mates eventually led to additional collaborations, compilations and a publishing deal with Phoenix Music International (no relation lol). Now based in London, and further developing and perfecting his semi lo-fi soul-bass-hop sound with an electronic cherry on top, you can find Jonny either guitar in hand with his notebook open contemplating lyrics or working on the melody for the next hit summer dance tune while regularly gigging and currently studying for a degree in music production.

Jonny has just put the finishing touches to his new EP which will be available to download towards the end of the summer

Hip Hop Rapper Mr Arch on the Sunday Lunch Show

Hi Listeners

On this weeks show (21st July) I was joined by upcoming hip hop star Mr Arch.

You may well remember the name! that is because he rapped on another of the show`s guests track `Catch me if you Can` by R&B s singer Rajiv.

Mr Arch a.k.a Captain Hook first blessed the mic, spitting to Drum N Bass, and making mix-tapes with his pal Richard who inherited his dad’s  1210s. Eventually he made the progression from Drum N Bass to Grime, MC`ing on pirate radio stations and performing at live events with underground Grime crews formed with other heads from around the way (Stevenage). Unfortunately due to musical differences,… the crew he was a member of disbanded.

Shortly after, he left Hertfordshire moving back to London where his Dad had his own studio. This gave Mr Arch the time to develop his skills, lyricism, and experiment with music production techniques with his Dad as his mentor.A few years later, he has emerged onto the scene once again as a solo artist. Having moved from grime to hip hop, a musical genre in which he feels he can better express himself.Working hard in the studio, Mr Arch has recorded many tracks refining his style, to bring the real essence of hip hop; true lyricism with meaning, and original beats combining what’s real, with what’s sic.We are now all eagerly awaiting his debut EP?

Check out the complete interview and listen out for my attempt (be it feeble), at rapping the catch me if you can Mr Arch rap

Kyle Parry on the Sunday Lunch Show

Hi Listeners

This week I was joined in the studio by singer songwriter Kyle Parry who describes his music as light indie rock

Kyle is a singer/songwriter from Wales. His music is a mix of his influences – Stereophonics, Squeeze, Michael Jackson etc. He has been singing from the age of around ten and playing guitar since fifteen. Working the pub and club circuit locally, he realised he wanted to push his original material further. Kyle has performed at Welsh festivals like “Head Stock” and “Party in the Parc”, amongst others. He has also performed in Liverpool “Cavern” and “Zanzibar”, and “The Hard Rock Cafe” in London. In February 2012, Kyle was the support for the opening of Matt Cardle’s UK Tour. Later on that year, he played at Real Radio’s “Fun in the Sun” with artists such as Marcus Collins and The Lovable Rogues. Kyle is finishing off his debut album “Late nights and early mornings” which will be released on 4th May 2013.

In Feb 2012 Kyle kicked off  the winner of the Xfactor, Matt Cardles tour!  for the opening two nights, and got rave reviews..

Lee & Brendan from the Mannequins on Sunday Lunch

Hi listeners

Last week (28th) the show played host to  an hour long special for the Mannequins, ok well 2 of them! I was joined in Studio 1 by lead singer Lee Bonnington and Drummer  Brendan Ivie, Chris is still in bed!!!!

First of all we congratulated Lee on the newest arrival to his family with the birth of his daughter on the Friday, before being treated to some Mannequins exclusive gossip, info on the upcoming video (that you can be part off) along with some acoustic versions of  their brand new material, so new in fact they have not played it as a band as yet, Lee has a real talent for song writing and is an accomplished song writer, so I am looking forward to hearing the new tracks done with the full band, (hopefully at the Brentwood Festival 5th 6th & 7th July)

If you have missed previous interviews and live sessions, fear not these can be found in earlier show page`s within the Sunday Lunch Show menu.

`Velvet Tree` on the Sunday Lunch Show

Hi Listeners

Straight from their recording session on the stage of this years Phoenix FM`s Creative Session I was joined in the studio by Velvet Tree, they where the first off what was going to be a surprisingly packed Sunday Lunch show with a 60 piece choir!! yes that’s right!!  and the band  calico still to come.

they describe themselves as;

“In 1998, Tarek and I started a band with the intention of forming a predominantly acoustic act – acoustic guitars, harmonica, some percussion…..that sort of thing. 6 months later we’d acquired bass, drums, electric guitar, keyboards and viola. So much for that idea then.  Far too many years later, now with Joe on board, we’re having another crack at it…..”

`HAVVA` on Sunday Lunch

Hi Listeners

My second guest in the studio last week (7th April) was the talented singer songwriter HAVVA.

Her lyrics po…rtray an affluent understanding of deep emotions, which captivates her audience.
Along with being extremely talented with fantastic vocal`s Havva is also charming and funny, but don’t take my word for it have a listen to the full interview

`Navacross`live on the Sunday Lunch Show

Hi Listeners

This week I was joined in the studio by the band `Navacross`

NavaCross have been on the scene for a number of years, performing at many venues and festivals across the South East, including  Gig in the park (Halesworth, Suffolk), G-Fest (Harlow), Fling Fest (Chelmsford), RT fest (Braintree) Minories Gallery (Colchester), The Half moon (Putney, London), Icarus Club (Lewisham), The Bull (Colchester), The Golden Fleece (Chelmsford) The Victoria Inn (Colchester), along with a number of live radio sessions.

They started as an acoustic trio of guitars and vocals, quite soon percussion and drums were added, For a long time they didn’t have a bass player but over time  the songs have  evolved to necessitate the  need for bass. Mike  fills this role  when they want to perform upbeat electric sets, other times they  are joined  by  friend Gary Choules  or John Cullenton on Double Bass.

Their current self titled  album, released via Hi4Head records, is available in Rough Trade Records,  HMV(R.I.P), and other good record shops, you can order direct from Hi4head records via the link on this site and even from Amazon and all the main online music sites.
