Saturday’s football saw Leyton Orient continue to set the pace in EFL League Two, following their trip to Stockport County.

Goals from Darren Pratley and Omar Beckles cancelled out the home side’s early opener and ensured a 2-1 victory for Richie Wellens’ men, which gave them a 5-point lead at the top of the table after second-placed Stevenage were held to a 1-1 draw away to Grimsby Town.

Southend United‘s 11-match unbeaten run came to an end, as the shock result of the day in the National League saw them lose 3-1 away to struggling Gateshead.

But Dagenham & Redbridge continued their fine form with a 2-1 win over struggling Scunthorpe United at the Chigwell Construction Stadium, thanks to a first-half goal from Matt Phipps and a late winner from new signing Jay Bird.

In the Second Round Proper of the FA Trophy, there was disappointment for Billericay Town in our featured game of the day as the Isthmian Premier League outfit were knocked out by National League South side Bath City, who scored a 3-1 victory at New Lodge.

Concord Rangers of the National League South also went out, losing 3-2 at home to Harrow Borough of the Southern League Premier Division South, but our two other local step two sides fared better.

Chelmsford City won 2-1 at home to Southern League Premier Division Central side Redditch United, whilst at Cressing Road, Braintree Town scored a 1-0 victory over Brackley Town of the National League North to reach the third round.

In the Isthmian Premier League, Hornchurch missed the chance to remain top of the table as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Brightlingsea Regent.

But the surprise result of the day in the IPL came at the Len Salmon Stadium, where Bowers & Pitsea secured only their second league win of the season as they beat high-flying Aveley 2-1.

In the Isthmian North, Hashtag United kept up their promotion challenge and stayed in third place, after a 3-2 win away to Grays Athletic.

And in the Essex Senior League, Redbridge are now only behind leaders Enfield on goal difference.

The Motormen beat bottom club Southend Manor 4-2 at Oakside, whilst Enfield were beaten 2-1 at home by Stansted.

Saturday’s Thurlow Nunn Division One South action saw Frenford remain at the summit, as they won 2-1 at home to Sporting Bengal United.
