Another packed Saturday of sport saw England narrowly fail to win in the finals of the women’s Rugby World Cup and the men’s Rugby League World Cup, whilst in Tennis, Great Britain – having reached the semi-finals of the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time since 1981 – were narrowly edged out by Australia.

The top two tiers of English Football are now finished until after Christmas, with the 2022 World Cup in Qatar commencing next weekend.

And in the Premier League, Brentford’s Ivan Toney – who narrowly missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the tournament – provided the shock result of the day as his two goals for Brentford saw them beat champions Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Closer to home, Leyton Orient remain top of EFL League Two after goals from Paul Smyth and George Moncur (from the penalty spot) saw them win 2-0 at Harrogate Town.

In the National League, in-form Southend United made it 11 league games without defeat and are up to fifth after beating Dorking Wanderers 2-0 at Roots Hall, whilst Dagenham & Redbridge scored a superb 3-0 victory away to Solihull Moors.

In the National League South Chelmsford City saw their promotion hopes suffer a blow ahead of their FA Cup 2nd Round replay against Barnet on Monday night, as they lost 2-0 at home to Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Braintree Town suffered a second successive defeat, losing 1-0 away to bottom club Weymouth whilst Concord Rangers drew 1-1 with Welling United at the Aspect Arena.

Our featured match in the Isthmian Premier League saw Billericay Town beat Horsham 5-3 in a thriller at New Lodge, whilst in the day’s big game Aveley knocked  Hornchurch off the top of the table by beating them 1-0 at Parkside.

Bowers & Pitsea continue to struggle after a late goal saw them lose 1-0 away to Potters Bar Town, who are now the league leaders.

In the Isthmian North, the manager of the month curse struck for Brentwood Town after the Blues, whose manager Rod Stringer had been awarded the Isthmian League prize during the week, lost 1-0 at Stowmarket Town.

We had two featured ties in the Second Round of the FA Vase, where a brace from Romford‘s Camilo Restrepo in the final 20 minutes saw Boro defeat fellow Essex Senior League side Little Oakley 2-0 at Mayesbrook Park.

But in our other featured game, Buckhurst Hill exited the competition after losing 3-2 away to Lakenheath, whilst Woodford Town, Stansted and Burnham Ramblers were also knocked out.

Saturday’s local rugby action saw unbeaten Harlow stay top of Counties 1 Essex, as they won 34-17 away to Romford & Gidea Park.
